Christian Wives in the Home 🏡 Part 3
1 Peter 3:5-6 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement. KJV Note: MKJV=Modern King James Version
The Apostle Peter has not designed or desired to see the married women of God become their husbands slaves, but instead become what our Father in Heaven created them to be to their husbands, as it is written, "And the LORD God said, 'It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.' (Genesis 2:18) (MKJV). The Christian wife is to be to her husband a contributor aiding him in the life the two spend together here as pilgrims and sojourners on their way home to Heaven. She is to aid her husband and support him in every way. This world is not our permenant home and therefore, our temporary home here on the earth must be a place reflecting the love and forbearance of our Father in Heaven between the husband and wife, so as to bring up children in an environment that is as close to the heart of God that it can be, for God has placed within the inner woman a nurturing spirit that far exceeds that of the spirit within the man/husband, for I believe that this is why our Father in Heaven refers to the woman as the man's helper. The Apostle Peter now declares these final words to the scattered Christian wives reminding them of the behavior of the women of God that came before them, "For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement." (1 Peter 3:5-6) (KJV). When the Apostle Peter writes 'being in subjection unto their own husbands', he does not mean (as I have already stated above) that they are to be as slaves to their husbands, but just as our Lord Jesus Christ willingly submitted Himself to the will of God the Father, as it is written, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the Cross." (Philippians 2:5-8) (KJV). The pattern for every Christian husband and wife is what we see here in our Lord, Master, and Savior Jesus Christ, for He being God humbled Himself and became a man because He loved human sinners so much that He wanted to save/redeem or buy back from sin or pay the ransom for every sinner who would come to Him in repentance and faith. Likewise, the Christian wife as she accepts and obeys the order of God (1 Corinthians 11:3) will be willing to submit herself to that order just as Abraham's wife Sara did many centuries in the past because God/Jesus is the same today, yesterday, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). When your trust and hope is completely and solely in God, then the Christian wife won't see being lower in rank or order to her husband as something grievous or burdensome, but instead it will be wonderful, wise, and worshipful for her to fulfill the will of God in her life and ministry in her home on earth away from home in Heaven. Amen!!!
Adam Clarke had this to say of 1 Peter 3:5-6, "Simplicity reigned in primitive times; natural ornaments alone were then in use. Trade and commerce brought in luxuries; and luxury brought pride, and all the excessive nonsense of Dress. No female head ever looks so well as when adorned with its own hair alone. This is the ornament appointed by God. To cut it off or to cover it is an unnatural practice; and to exchange the hair which God has given for hair of some other color, is an insult to the Creator. How the delicacy of the female character can stoop to the use of false hair, and especially when it is considered that the chief part of this kind of hair was once the natural property of some ruffian soldier, who fell in battle by many a ghastly wound, is more than I can possibly comprehend. The women who trust Not in God are fond of dress and frippery; those who trust in God follow nature and common sense. It will rarely be found that women who are fond of dress, and extravagant in it, have any subjection to their husbands but what comes from mere necessity. Indeed, their dress, which they intend as an attractive to the eyes of others, is a sufficient proof that they have neither love nor respect for their own husbands. Let them who are concerned refute the charge. "The wife of Abraham reverenced him, and called him lord, as it is written, Genesis 18:12: And my lord is old. The words of the Apostle imply that she acknowledged his superiority, and her own subjection to him, in the order of God. As Abraham is represented the father of all his male believing descendants, so Sara is represented as the mother of all her believing female posterity. A son of Abraham is a true believer; a daughter of Sarah is the same. For you cannot maintain your relationship to her longer than ye believe; and ye cannot believe longer than ye continue to obey. It is difficult to extract any sense out of this clause. The original is not very easy; Μη φοβουμεναι μηδεμιαν πτοησιν may be rendered, And not fearing with any terror. If ye do well, and act conscientiously your part as faithful wives, ye will at no time live under the distressing apprehension of being found out, or terrified at every appearance of the discovery of infidelities, or improper conduct. Being not guilty of these, you will not have occasion to fear detection. On this subject a learned man has quoted these words, - hic murus aheneus esto, Nil conscire sibi, nulla pallescere culpa. 'Let this be my brazen wall, to be self-convicted of no private delinquency, nor to change color at being charged with a fault.' Happy is the wife, and happy is the husband, who can conscientiously adopt the saying."
If you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ and His amazing healing power, pray this from your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ (you speaking directly to Him), Dear Lord Jesus, I confess to You that I am a sinner and I need Your forgiveness. I believe You shed Your Blood and died for my sins. I believe that You rose from the dead proving that You alone are God. I repent of my sins. I want to turn from my sins. I ask You Dear Lord Jesus to come into my heart and take control of my life. I want You to be my Lord, Savior, and my God. Amen...
Sincerely in Christ,
