Jesus describes His True Disciples

Mark 8:34-38 When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.” NKJV

There has been a discussion or debate perhaps in every generation about what distinguishes, determines, or describes a true Christian. Our Lord Jesus Christ spent all night in prayer with the Father to select the initial 12 men that would walk with Him in every corner of that small region of the earth that our Lord would confine Himself to. These men were chosen by Him and did not make a decision for Him. These men were called by Him disciples. The word disciple or disciples is used in the gospel accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and the Book of Acts 255 times. This is the word used to describe a person that has been saved, sanctified, and sent by God the Father, God the Son the Lord Jesus Christ and God the Holy Spirit. These early men and women as well as all in every generation are they who have continued in His Words and are His disciples indeed and are free by the truth contained in His Words.

John 8:31-36 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My Word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” NKJV

From the very beginning of our Lord’s earthly ministry, He and the people who followed Him were questioned about many things by the well-established Jewish religious leaders. As we have learned from all four of the gospel writers, our Lord and these men with Him were watched, scrutinized, and criticized about everything that they did or did not do amongst the Jewish people. Their motives and intentions were always questioned by the religious leaders, they were ignored for the most part by the Gentiles (Romans, etc.), and many of the common Jewish people were drawn to our Lord and these men for the miracles done by them. Our Lord gave these men power to perform miracles as He so performed them and this would always draw crowds or multitudes of people. However, as we discovered later on at the end after Christ died many of these multiplied thousands, who were fed, healed of disease, made to walk and see were nowhere to be found as we find only 120 men and women together in the upper room on the day of Pentecost. Also we know that one of the original 12 (Judas) was not a true disciple as he betrayed our Lord for money and the gospel writer the Apostle John confirmed his true heart as he records that Judas (the treasurer for the 12) was a thief as he would commonly, constantly, and continually take money from the treasury used to supply the earthly needs of the 12 and our Lord (see the article entitled “Things or Christ”, http://www.faithwriters.com/article-details.php?id=87513 ).

John 8:37-44 “I know that you are Abraham’s descendants, but you seek to kill Me, because My Word has no place in you. I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have seen with your father.” They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham. But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. You do the deeds of your father.” Then they said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; we have one Father --- God.” Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My Word. You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” NKJV

What happened to the multiplied thousands that followed Him and received healing from His hands? Were they really disciples? What about the multiplied billions today who say they are Christians? Are they Christians/disciples? The English word disciple comes from the Greek word mathetes, which means a pupil, a student, or a learner. The Book of Acts records the word Christian once and the New Testament writer the Apostle Peter records the word once. The English word Christian comes from the Greek word Christianos, which simply means a follower of Christ. Therefore, we can safely say that since the word disciple is used by our Lord to describe those who belong to Him, then the word Christian and disciple are synonymous with each other. Therefore, we can conclude also that no one can be a Christian without being a true disciple and if one is not a true disciple we can conclude that they have not yet been made a Christian by the regenerating work of God the Holy Spirit that produces new birth. Earlier in this account from the gospel writer John Mark, he details our Lord having fed 4,000 men, being troubled in Spirit by the Pharisees wanting some other sign from Him, warning the disciples of the doctrine/teaching of the Pharisees and Herod, healing a blind man at Bethsaida, rebuking Peter and explaining or teaching them of His approaching death then resurrection, and now finally describing to all who His true disciples would be (see the article entitled “A Christian Indeed”, http://www.faithwriters.com/article-details.php?id=125568 ).

Those people our Lord calls will understand that they have been bought with the price of His blood at Calvary and now their spirit, soul, and body is owned by the Lord Jesus Christ. Their old life of being a servant or slave of sin is finished and they are dead now to sin but alive to Jesus Christ. They deny their flesh and old passions and submit to His will as He reveals it to them through His Word that will remain forever. They consider themselves dead to their old way of life and now purpose to follow in the same narrow way of the Lord Jesus Christ accompanying Him pursuing His desires and passions. They desire to present their bodies to Him every day as a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to Him, which is their reasonable service. They no longer want to conform to this world system, but instead want their minds renewed continually so that they can prove what is pleasing, acceptable, and the Lord Jesus’ perfect will (see the article entitled “The Proper Example of a True Believer”, http://www.faithwriters.com/article-details.php?id=123957 ).

Romans 6:18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. NKJV

Romans 6:20-22 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. NKJV

1 Corinthians 15:31 I affirm, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily. NKJV

Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. NKJV

Galatians 5:24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. NKJV

Galatians 6:14 But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. NKJV

Colossians 3:5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. NKJV

1 Peter 4:1-2 Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. NKJV

Our Lord describes His disciples as the unashamed. They love Him and His Words with such a passion that’s so strong that even the threat or fear of death cannot shake, for even if the threat of their skin being peeled from their bodies from head to toe would be made to them, they would (by the grace He gives) still not deny His Words. His Words to them are like food to their bodies they hunger and thirst for His Words every single day to strengthen and nourish their spirit and soul. His Words are more precious to them than any amount of silver or gold and if the whole world were offered to them by the enemy they would count it as dung in comparison to the excellency of the knowledge and intimacy of Christ Jesus their Lord and His Words. They cringe every time they grieve Him by their own sinful words and actions. Their burning passion is to be a workman rightly dividing His Word of Truth and then expressing that truth in love the kind and compassionate parts as well as the hard and stern sayings. By His Words they seek to cleanse their hearts every morning and ingest them and make them the very essence of their being. Far from being ashamed of His Words and His gospel their very spiritual breath is His Words see “Letter from Pastor Saeed Abedini”http://ag.org/top/downloads/Abedini_Letter.pdf).

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. NKJV

Philippians 3:10 “That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death” NKJV

2 Timothy 1:8 “Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God” NKJV

2 Timothy 1:12 For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day. NKJV

Hebrews 13:13 Therefore let us go forth to Him, outside the camp, bearing His reproach. NKJV

“Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ.” “Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, Communion without confession, absolution without personal confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer 1906-1945

“It is impossible to live the life of a disciple without definite times of secret prayer. You will find that the place to enter in is in your business, as you walk along the streets, in the ordinary ways of life, when no one dreams you are praying, and the reward comes openly, a revival here, a blessing there.” Oswald Chambers 1874-1917

““True it is,” said Bishop Hooper, the night before he suffered martyrdom, “that life is sweet, and death is bitter, but eternal death is more bitter, and eternal life is more sweet.” As the happiness of Heaven with Christ, is enough to countervail the loss of life itself for Christ, so the gain of all the world in sin, is not sufficient to countervail the ruin of the soul by sin. Those that are ashamed of Christ in this world where He is despised, He will be ashamed of in that world where He is eternally adored. They shall not share with Him in His glory then, that were not willing to share with Him in His disgrace now.” Matthew Henry 1662-1714

If you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ and His amazing healing power, pray this from your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ (you speaking directly to Him), Dear Lord Jesus, I confess to You that I am a sinner and I need Your forgiveness. I believe You shed Your Blood and died for my sins. I believe that You rose from the dead proving that You alone are God. I repent of my sins. I want to turn from my sins. I ask You Dear Lord Jesus to come into my heart and take control of my life. I want You to be my Lord, Savior, and my God. Amen...

Jesus Condemns then Replaces Religious Traditions

Mark 7:1-13

When Moses looked upon that bush that burned but was not consumed and entered into the presence of Almighty God he was so awe struck with the power, splendor, and majesty of I AM that he did not even eat or drink anything for 40 days. It was the Glory of the Lord that rested on Mount Sinai and it was the presence of God’s Glory that filled Moses and sustained him. When Moses descended from the Mountain his faced was shining like that of a lamp because that is what being in the presence of God the Father will do to and for any person. Moses probably could have never dreamed that he would break those stone tablets that he walked down the Mountain with that contained the Ten Commandments but when he looked upon the people worshipping before a golden calf that they had made the Scriptures says, “So Moses’ anger became hot, and he cast the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain.”

Ezekiel 33:31 So they come to you as people do, they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words, but they do not do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their hearts pursue their own gain. NKJV

The words of Moses’ brother Aaron (who facilitated over the rebellion) were on point then and they reverberated for the many centuries forward to the time of our Lord Jesus and even up to present day Jews and Aaron said, “You know the people that they are set on evil.” Even with all that Moses witnessed over the period of the 40 years in the wilderness with the people of Israel, he still could not have imagined the additional 600 some man-made rules, regulations, and rituals that the Jewish Rabbis would ordain over the centuries. Because of the many man-made traditions established, the actual Ten Commandments had almost become an after-thought and even the traditions were being held in as high regard as the Word of God.

Colossians 2:21-23 “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” which all concern things which perish with the using --- according to the commandments and doctrines of men? These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh. NKJV

Titus 1:14 “Not giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn from the truth” NKJV

1 Peter 1:18 “Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers” NKJV

Our Lord enters into the land of Jerusalem with the 12 disciples and they purposefully ignore the religious traditions but cling to the Word of God from the Pentateuch and the Word being taught to them every day by the Lord Jesus Christ. Of course everywhere our Lord Jesus and the disciples went this immediately provoked a response of complaint from the Scribes and the Pharisees. These men were so religious (yet without any love to God) and concerned with their outward show of piety that they were particular of how they washed their hands before eating a meal. It was some tradition handed down by Elders of old that required them to wash in a special way as if this would endear one to the heart of God.

Matthew 23:1-3 Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples, saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do.” NKJV

Isaiah 1:13-14 Bring no more futile sacrifices; Incense is an abomination to Me. The New Moons, the Sabbaths, and the calling of assemblies --- I cannot endure iniquity and the sacred meeting. Your New Moons and your appointed feasts My soul hates; They are a trouble to Me, I am weary of bearing them. NKJV

God the Father never intended for His Word given to Moses to end up with man-made rules of washing hands, washing cups, washing pitchers, washing copper vessels, and washing couches to be elevated to equal status with His eternal Word. This was bad enough but in doing these ridicules man-made things for so many years they had made the Word of God to be of no effect in their daily lives and this is what made them hypocrites because they had no power in their lives to live a life pleasing to God (see the article entitled “Making the Word of God of No Effect”, http://www.faithwriters.com/article-details.php?id=90554 ). The irony of these traditions of washing your hands a certain way and the others were picked up and are practiced by some later religions like Islam and Hinduism. Israel was to be a light to the Gentile world to point them to YAHWEH the One and Only God and instead they became a stumbling block. Israel failed at their responsibility of leading the Gentile world to God by compromising with the Gentile practices and false belief systems.

Isaiah 49:6 Indeed He says, “It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob, And to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.” NKJV

Our Lord Jesus has come to His own people the Jews and they have refused Him. He is to the religious leaders not the True Messiah, so they follow Him everywhere and find fault with Him and His disciples about things that are insignificant and have no eternal value or ability to rescue those that are perishing in sin. These men by their religion have bolted the door shut to salvation from those Jews that sincerely desired to enter in and have communion with YAHWEH. This is why our Lord has come to replace Israel who failed to be the light YAHWEH had called them to be. Our Lord has come to condemn and do away with their religious traditions and fulfill all of the Law of Moses and the Prophets by His death, burial, and resurrection from the dead and make a way for every heart that is poor in spirit, filled with godly sorrow over their sin, and hungering and thirsting for righteousness to receive from Him new life/resurrection life. He offers it to the Jew first and then to the Gentiles.

Luke 2:32 A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel. NKJV

“One hundred religious persons knit into a unity by careful organizations do not constitute a church any more than eleven dead men make a football team. The first requisite is life, always.” A. W. Tozer 1897-1963

“Of all bad men religious bad men are the worst.” “For whatever else the religious life may be, it is the fountain of self-knowledge and disillusion, the safest form of psychoanalysis.” C. S. Lewis 1898-1963

“It is a terribly easy matter to be a minister of the gospel and a vile hypocrite at the same time.” Charles Spurgeon 1834-1892

“Temptations are never so dangerous as when they come to us in a religious garb.” D. L. Moody 1837-1899

“I declare I know of no state of soul more dangerous than to imagine we are born again and sanctified by the Holy Ghost, because we have picked up a few religious feelings.” J. C. Ryle 1816-1900

“If ever a monk could get to Heaven through monastic discipline, I was that monk. And yet my conscience would not give me certainty, but I always doubted and said, ‘You didn't do that right. You weren’t contrite enough. You left that out of your confession.’ The more I tried to remedy an uncertain, weak, and troubled conscience with human traditions, the more I daily found it more uncertain, weaker, and more troubled.” Martin Luther 1483-1546

Jesus without Honor?

Mark 6:4-6 But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.” Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. And He marveled because of their unbelief. Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching. NKJV

The Prophet Isaiah told the entire contingent of Jewish people and the rest of the world 700 years before the angel visited Mary to announce to her that she had been chosen to give birth to the Son of God when he said, “He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.” The thought to those of us that have been born again/redeemed that our Lord Jesus Christ was then and is still now despised by people and without honor before them is hurtful, horrific, and haunting to realize that they have such a veil of sin over their hearts that blinds them to His glorious beauty. As we have seen earlier in the gospel of Mark, our Lord was from the very beginning of His earthly ministry hated by the Scribes, Pharisees, and Sadducees because they felt threatened by Him as they were fully aware that He was a far greater Teacher (who taught with Authority) than any of them, yet they never knew of any place where He studied letters and this perplexed them, but it did not make them see Christ as God.

John 7:15 And the Jews marveled, saying, “How does this Man know letters, having never studied?” NKJV

They were afraid that He would bring undue attention to the Jews from the Romans that would make them want to remove some of their freedoms and thereby take away the Jewish religious leader’s ability to rule freely. Our Lord was never concerned with earthly treasure or honor from men for He did not even own His own home and was sustained by the loving generosity of some of the women and others who followed Him. The religious rulers were greedy and covetous and would not stand for anyone coming and upsetting their cash flow from the people and so it is understandable that they gave our Lord no honor ever and as the 3 years of His ministry progressed they worked hard every day to suppress His influence over the Jewish people. Therefore, His own country of Nazareth did not honor Him for fear of the Pharisees and other religious leaders (see article entitled "For they loved the Praise of Men more than the Praise of God", http://www.faithwriters.com/article-details.php?id=86322).

John 9:29 “We know that God spoke to Moses; as for this fellow, we do not know where He is from.” NKJV

John 12:42-43 Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. NKJV

The heart of our Lord was filled with truth because He is the truth. So He says that even among His relatives in the flesh those who lived with Him were too without honor toward Him. This is remarkably astonishing to me because His sisters and brothers in the flesh had to witness the love, virtue, truth, compassion, kindness, self-control, patience, righteousness, and all the other endless qualities of His Divine character every day of His life. It is often in a family that the closeness of upbringing and seeing one do the mundane task of life day in and day out far too often obscures a view of the relative of the person being elevated to a higher or more lofty status in society and the world at large by the will of the people.

Matthew 10:34-36 “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’” NKJV

John 7:2-5 Now the Jews’ Feast of Tabernacles was at hand. His brothers therefore said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing. For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” For even His brothers did not believe in Him. NKJV

Let us reflect back to the life of Joseph and how he was despised by his brothers for coming to them with his dreams he received from God that were interpreted to show him being ruler over His brothers and they subject to him. As we know from that account in Joseph’s life, it infuriated his brothers so much that they sold him off into slavery and went back and lied to their Father Jacob saying he was killed by some wild animal. We know that everything Joseph spoke of from his dreams came to pass exactly as it was given to him by God.

Genesis 37:8 And his brothers said to him, “Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed have dominion over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words. NKJV

Like Joseph our Lord was miss-understood by his relatives and perhaps looked upon and thought of as just one of the normal guys in the family and neighborhood because He did not hold Himself back from any of the normal activities of a Jewish boy growing up into manhood. Our Lord went to the same Jewish schools as His brothers and sisters and no doubt participated in school sports and other recreational activities like fishing, swimming, and other things that all the kids enjoyed. It is not stated directly in the gospels that Joseph and Mary told their other children about our Lord’s supernatural conception and His birth. I believe they being parents who sought to live and walk blameless under the Law of Moses would have told their other children when they were of appropriate age. It still was hard for the siblings to believe their words for they ate, slept, and played with Him and could not foresee Him working these great miracles and teaching such truth, it just did not register with them in their hearts.

Isaiah 53:2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. NKJV

“He partly excused it, as a common thing, and what might be expected, though not reasonably or justly. Some exceptions there may be to this rule; doubtless many have got over this prejudice, but ordinarily it holds good, that ministers are seldom so acceptable and successful in their own country as among strangers; familiarity in the younger years breeds a contempt, the advancement of one that was an inferior begets envy, and men will hardly set those among the guides of their souls whose fathers they were ready to set with the dogs of their flock; in such a case therefore it must not be thought hard, it is common treatment, it was Christ's, and wisdom is profitable to direct to other soil.” Matthew Henry 1662-1714

“He gave “sufficient” proof of His mission, and left them in their chosen unbelief without excuse. It is also true, in spiritual things, that the unbelief of a people prevents the influences of the Holy Spirit from being sent down to bless them. God requires faith. He hears only the prayers of faith. And when there is little true belief, and prayer is cold and formal, there the people sleep in spiritual death and are unblessed.” Albert Barnes 1798-1870

Jesus’ Power over Demons, Disease, and Death

Mark 5:1-43

As we saw in Mark Chapter 3, our Lord confronted the devil on every turn He would make as He went about doing good and healing many on His journey through the surrounding cities. In the last Chapter of Mark we were eye witnesses of His power over the created elements of nature the wind, the body of water, and the storms that produce rain, thunder, and lightning. He without effort spoke to the elements of nature and immediately they obeyed His Word. Our Lord is once again confronted by the works of the devil in three separate cases and each one is a result of the devil having dominion over the earth by the result of Adam’s sin. Again we see in stark contrast to what the religious Jewish hierarchy believed about the Lord Jesus, He was not in league with the devil but in conflict and battle with him at every turn to undue the havoc the enemy went about perpetrating in people’s lives.

In the first case, our Lord confronts a man possessed of many fierce demons that have so wreaked destruction in this man’s life that he no longer is able to control his behavior. The man is forced by the demons to live in a grave yard while inflicting cuts to his body every day. The man’s strength is far above other normal human beings because his body is no longer under his control and when the enemy sees our Lord they are instantly terrified and shriek back from Him as they bow to Him in fearful worship. But our Lord muzzled their speech and commanded them to come out of the man.

James 2:19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe --- and tremble! NKJV

The most odd part of this encounter is the demons ask our Lord to not send them out of the country perhaps they already knew of another person (maybe engaged in Baal worship, or astrology, or some other occult worship) they could have opportunity to inhabit. The demons in terror begged our Lord Jesus to send them into a heard of pigs nearby them. One of the other gospel writers said they begged our Lord Jesus to not send them to the abyss. This most strange occurrence for me is our Lord granted their request. He could have instantly zapped them into the torment of the abyss but He chose to leave them in this country but deliver, save, and rescue this man afflicted by them. Perhaps our Lord let the demons stay in that country because after witnessing this awesome miracle healing the people of that country said these words to Christ Jesus, “Then they began to plead with Him (the Lord Jesus) to depart from their region.” How foolish were these carnal people after seeing God at work they wanted nothing to do with our Lord Jesus Christ.

Revelation 9:20-21 But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk. And they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts. NKJV

Now there was the man his mind and body now healed and he is sitting at our Lord’s feet imploring Him to let him come with Him where ever He is going, but our Lord would not permit him but instead said, “Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you.” The man did just that and the people where he lived were amazed at his transformation. Our Lord’s power over the demons solidifies Him as God for they would not cower in fear, dread, and terror at the presence of a mere man.

Deuteronomy 30:3 “That the LORD your God will bring you back from captivity, and have compassion on you.” NKJV

Psalms 111:4 He has made His wonderful works to be remembered; The LORD is gracious and full of compassion. NKJV

Micah 7:19 He will again have compassion on us, And will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins Into the depths of the sea. NKJV

Romans 9:15 For He says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion.” NKJV

Secondly, our Lord while walking through the crowds being pressed on every side from the people trying to get near to Him that they might receive some blessing from the Lord Jesus, but there was one women with a blood disease or illness that caused her to continue to bleed and bleed. This woman was so distraught and dejected from going to doctor after doctor trying to be cured from this disease or illness. Because of the Law she was unable to have communion with her husband or children and she could not worship in the temple at all. She perhaps had heard about the Lord Jesus Christ and knew of His compassion and mercy He showed to many people afflicted with various diseases.

Psalms 41:8 “An evil disease,” they say, “clings to him. And now that he lies down, he will rise up no more.” NKJV

She knew that she was unclean in the sight of all the Jews and this is why she purposed in her heart to touch our Lord’s garment because she in her mind did not believe Jesus would touch her. For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.” She pressed her way through the crowd all the while trying to keep herself from being recognized by any of the people in the crowd for they would try and prevent her from getting close enough to our Lord. Alas she touches His garment and the Scripture says, “Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction.” Our Lord the moment she touched Him in faith also knew immediately that power went out of Him and there His power that proceeds from Him to cure disease also testifies of Him being God.

Psalms 103:3-5 Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with loving-kindness and tender mercies, Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. NKJV

Thirdly, just before our Lord’s encounter with the blood diseased woman, a ruler of the Jewish synagogue came rushing to Him pleading for Him to come to his house because his daughter was close to death. Our Lord agreed but while they were on their way to Jairus’ house he received the bad news that she has died. Well, what point is it in troubling Jesus any longer to heal his daughter. Now our Lord will display His power over death. It is only God that can forgive sin as some of the Pharisees said to our Lord on other occasions and now our Lord was ridiculed and laughed to scorn by some of the Jewish people when He said, “Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping.”

James 2:26 “For as the body without the spirit is dead” NKJV

Our Lord put those scorning Jews out of the house as not to give them the privilege of witnessing His power first hand because of their mocking unbelief. It brings to mind His words of “Do not cast your pearls before swine or give that which is holy to dogs.” Our Lord is the Father of all spirits and knows that her spirit was in the presence of God the Father and that He needed only to call her back to her body that appeared to be in the state of sleep. He said, “Little girl, I say to you, arise” and the girl immediately got up by the power our Lord has over man’s final enemy death.

Hebrews 11:35 “Women received their dead raised to life again.” NKJV

Therefore, we see in this 5th Chapter of Marks Gospel that our Lord defeats the enemy who imprisoned a man by demons, bound a woman with a blood disease, and struck down the life of a little precious girl of 12 years old in death. Our Lord demonstrates His Sovereign Power over these 3 things demons, disease, and death because as the Scripture says, “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” Our Lord brought the destruction of the devils work to eternal destruction by His own death, burial, and resurrection from the dead 2,000 years ago.

“There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors, and hail a materialist and a magician with the same delight. C. S. Lewis 1898-1963

“Your foes may be numerous as the devils in hell, strong and wily; but He will save.” F. B. Meyer 1847-1929

“I don’t believe there are devils enough in hell to pull a boy out of the arms of a Godly Mother.” Billy Sunday 1862-1935

“We have accounts of the deification of men in pagan mythology. But I do not remember any account of a god becoming a man, to help man. Whoever heard of Jupiter or Mars or Minerva coming down and attempting to bear the burdens of men? The gods were willing enough to receive the gifts of men, but Christianity is unique in the fact that our God became a man with human infirmity and emptied Himself of the glory of Heaven, in order that He might take upon Himself the sins, diseases and weakness of our humanity.” A. C. Dixon 1854-1925

“The high Heaven covereth as well tall mountains as small mole hills, and mercy can cover all. The more desperate thy disease, the greater is the glory of thy physician, who hath perfectly cured thee.” Abraham Wright 1611-1690

“As I go into a cemetery I like to think of the time when the dead shall rise from their graves. ... Thank God, our friends are not buried; they are only sown!” D. L. Moody 1837-1899

“I am a spiritual being... After this body is dead, my spirit will soar. I refuse to let what will rot rule the eternal. I choose self-control. I will be drunk only by joy. I will be impassioned only by my faith. I will be influenced only by God. I will be taught only by Christ.” Max Lucado

Amen...

Jesus Calms the Storm in the Sinners Heart

Mark 4:35-39 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. NKJV

Her name is not important but her story is one of millions throughout human history. She is 35 years old and has been selling her body to any man that would pay her. The reason she does it is because she is addicted to heroin and she must feed her body this drug every day now or else it will become sick and bring her into severe pain. The cycle of addiction is the same each day. She has to have sex with enough men to buy her daily dose or fix of heroin to satisfy her bodies need.

Isaiah 48:22 “There is no peace,” says the LORD, “for the wicked.” NKJV

Her soul is snared and restless yearning and longing for something or someone to break the chain that has it bound and to calm the raging storm that spreads within her heart day after day after day. She looks within and sees no good thing wondering if this is all there is and if she will ever be free. She reaches her breaking point and cries with the voice of her soul, “Who will deliver me from this body of death?” and she hears a whisper in her soul, “Peace, be still, it is I Jesus your Deliverer.”

Proverbs 12:25 Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad. KJV

Isaiah 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. KJV

The account of the Apostles getting into a boat to cross over the lake was given to us by Matthew, Mark, and Luke. It is not a parable but a recording of an actual event that took place during our Lord Jesus’ earthly ministry. I have always seen in this actual event a great, gracious, and glorious picture of what our Lord Jesus does in the heart of a sinner when He freely gives His grace through faith as He resurrects the soul from spiritual death. First, just as the disciples stood on one side of the lake needing to venture to the other side, so does the soul of every person born into the world stand on the side of spiritual death needing to get to the other side where spiritual life in Jesus Christ only is found by the new birth.

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” NKJV

John 3:5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” NKJV

John 5:24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” NKJV

Secondly, as our Lord was with the disciples crossing the lake, so is He in the Person of God the Holy Spirit present everywhere sinners are in the world sowing the seed of His Word through His already redeemed sons and daughters through radio, television, the internet, gospel tracts, in local churches, magazines, journals, newsletters, and other methods shining the light of His truth into this world of darkness.

John 1:9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world. NKJV

Romans 1:18-21 For the wrath of God is revealed from Heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. NKJV

Thirdly, a sinful heart is the inheritance of every one of us but the way the sin is expressed through the soul out of the body is different for each person. The Apostle Paul shows us in Romans Chapter 1 the deep extent that sin can be expressed out of the body for some hearts still darkened by sin. The life lived continually to indulge sins pleasure for a season or the life enslaved by sin of whatever manner it is expressed is a life of toil, tempest, and terror just like the raging storm faced by the disciples that night crossing the lake.

Romans 2:5-11 But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who “will render to each one according to his deeds”: eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness --- indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For there is no partiality with God. NKJV

Fourthly, just as our Lord was asleep in the boat as the disciples were frightened at the violent nature of the storm, so does He appear to the world at large to be dis-engaged or not in control, or non-loving (as many atheist would assert), or powerless to intervene in individual lives lived in affliction and oppression and powerless to defeat and overthrow the evil being manifested throughout the world. I recall a scene in the movie “The Encounter” when this young woman was speaking to Jesus and He said to her, “All you have to do is ask Me” and she got so angry as she said she had asked for God to intervene many times as she was molested by her step-father but that Jesus did not hear. You see just like that scene in that movie many horrific scenes like that are being played out every day and God does see and hears them all. When sin entered into our world, it guaranteed for us pain, suffering, violence, sickness, hate, murder, rape, addiction, stealing, and all the other evil we see in our world.

Job 5:7 Yet man is born to trouble, As the sparks fly upward. NKJV

Job 14:1 “Man who is born of woman Is of few days and full of trouble.” NKJV

Finally, humanity has been given the greatest gift and we did not even ask for it because we human beings are so spiritually dead we could not foresee the violent storm that’s in our hearts from birth. When the Prophet Jeremiah said, “The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked who can know it” these words surely did not come from his own reasoning or understanding but it was a direct revelation from God. That diagnosis proves the worst storms are not hurricanes, tornadoes, or any other like those, but it is the storm of sin that rages inside the human heart. God’s love for us even after our disobedience caused Him to send our Lord Jesus Christ to not just forgive our sin, but to actually become sin in our place that we might be made righteous. There is no greater love He could have shown for humanity. Now, because of what Jesus did by dying and shedding His blood, being buried, and resurrecting three days later, He stands at the door of every heart raging with the storm of sin waiting to hear, “Come in Lord I receive You as my own Lord, Master, and Savior and wash me from my sin in Your Blood and speak to this stormy sinful heart”, “Peace, be still.”

Here is an excerpt from the Book my Lord Jesus Christ wrote through me, entitled “Silent Assassins of the Soul”, Chapter 16: The Promise of Rest: Matthew 11:28 (AMP): “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest. [I will ease and relieve and refresh your souls.]” “In this verse from the Gospel of Matthew, the word “rest” that Christ uses means “repose or a freedom from work, strain, or responsibility; the absence of mental or emotional stress or anxiety.” He is talking here about peace of mind. Not a false or made up peace, but the peace that only He can give. His peace enables a person to deal with the most tragic events of life with a calm confidence and assurance that such things are not happening in vain but for an eternal purpose.”

Psalm 34:6 This poor man cried out, and the LORD heard him, And saved him out of all his troubles. NKJV

John 8:12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” NKJV

John 8:31-32 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” NKJV

“You were placed here to train for eternity. Your body was only intended to be a house for your immortal spirit. It is flying in the face of God’s purposes to do as many do - to make the soul a servant to the body, and not the body a servant to the soul.”  J. C. Ryle 1816-1900

“Original sin may be defined as the hereditary corruption and depravity of our nature. This reaches every part of the soul, makes us abhorrent to God’s wrath and produces in us what Scripture calls works of the flesh.” John Calvin 1509-1564

“You will never find Jesus so precious as when the world is one vast howling wilderness. Then He is like a rose blooming in the midst of the desolation, a rock rising above the storm.” Robert Murray McCheyne 1813-1843

“Let the current of your being set towards God, then your life will be filled and calmed by one master-passion which unites and stills the soul.” Alexander MacLaren 1826-1910

If you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ and His amazing healing power, pray this from your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ (you speaking directly to Him), Dear Lord Jesus, I confess to You that I am a sinner and I need Your forgiveness. Jesus binds the devil

There he stands tall and princely the express image of one made to be royal and to rule. The man spoken of here is the first man Adam made in the image of God and united with God in holy fellowship as he names all of the animals and dresses and tends the Garden of Eden. Adam does not have to toil or labor but he has been given dominion over the entire earth with all of its goods and resources. Adam did not even have to build an irrigation system because God caused a mist to come up from the earth and water the entire ground from corner to corner and also a river out of Eden to water the many trees that the Lord God caused to grow from the ground for food. The only thing required of Adam was obedience to the will of God as He unfolded it to him. God placed one restriction on the man and one only and that was to not eat from one tree in the middle of the Garden.

Genesis 2:16-17 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” NKJV

Adam was given and entire earth and all that was in it would be under his authority for as long as he obeyed the will of God. Now prior to the earth and all that is in it was made by God, there was a rebellion that took place in Heaven. An angel named Lucifer led the rebellion and somehow persuaded one third of the other angels to fight with him against the loyal angelic servants of God led by Michael. Well, the outcome was sure as God’s strength and might through Michael and the faithful angels crushed the rebellion and the leader of the rebellion was cast out of Heaven forever. Just like the flash of lighting was how quick this lead angel fell from Heaven. Our Lord has created a place for this rebellious angel who is now known as the devil and those who followed him will be sent to this place of eternal torments by our Lord Jesus after He fulfills the Book of Revelation. The devil is not in his final place yet, but as the many prophesies of the Bible has been fulfilled to the exact letter, so will the last prophecies we find in the Book of Revelation be consummated with preciseness.

Revelation 20:10 The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. NKJV

Now this fallen angel the devil comes to Adam’s wife Eve and deceives her into disobeying God and she ate the fruit from the forbidden tree and gave to Adam and he ate and immediately they (by their disobedience) gave dominion of the earth to the devil and sin entered into man’s life. Adam and Eve were banished from Eden and all of its grace, peace, love, and provision and cast under the devil’s authority. Therefore, for millenniums man has been a slave of sin, darkness, and the devil. Man has been dead in trespasses and sins and sons of disobedience without hope and without God in this world. Because the earth’s dominion was lost by the first man Adam and had to be reclaimed by the Second Man Jesus Christ. Here is an excerpt from the book my Lord Jesus wrote through me “Silent Assassins of the Soul”: “The English word “dominion” is from the Hebrew word radah, which means to “tread down, that is, to subjugate (make subservient; force to submit or subdue), to reign and rule.” Man was created in the image of God and was to reign and rule upon this earth in knowledge, righteousness, and true holiness. Adam relinquished his own (and the whole human race’s) reign and rule over to Satan when he was deceived and disobeyed God. This is why the world is in turmoil, full of violence, immorality, hate, greed, lust, deceit, and all other forms of evil. It is only a reflection of the current ruler of this world—the devil.”

Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned. NKJV

Romans 5:15 But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. NKJV

Romans 5:19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous. NKJV

Adam’s disobedience plunged all of humanity into a state of dominion to sin, darkness, and the devil and only when the Second Man Christ would come and fulfill the will of God by His perfect obedience to the Law of God in word, thought, and deed would the devil then be bound. Jesus Christ by His death on the cross, and His blood, and His burial and resurrection has destroyed him the devil who had the power of death and our Lord has made alive from the spiritual death of trespasses and sins all that come to Him in repentance and faith. Now again we find our Lord being confronted by the religious Jews who first call Him insane after He healed a man with a withered hand on the Sabbath and then took it further by saying He was delivering people from the power and dominion of satan by satan’s authority. Here we have Scribes accusing the Son of God of being sent by satan and how ironic that our Lord would tell them (the Scribes) that their real spiritual father was the devil. Our Lord went about always doing good and healing people who were oppressed by the devil. It was His mission for leaving Heaven and becoming a Man.

Colossians 2:15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. NKJV

Therefore, our Lord wanted to immediately show them their insanity and so He spoke the following parable to them: “How can satan cast out satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. And if satan has risen up against himself, and is divided, he cannot stand, but has an end. No one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. And then he will plunder his house.” The hatred they expressed for our Lord was leading them into a most dangerous place where there would not be anything that God could do to rescue them. Our Lord’s whole purpose was to come to earth to reclaim its dominion back to humanity and take it away from the devil. It would be absolutely absurd to believe the devil would go about doing good to people when it is his desire to steal, kill, and destroy human beings and lead their souls into eternal damnation.

1 John 3:8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. NKJV

Our Lord Jesus Christ has bound the devil and he can never again have dominion over those who have been regenerated and born again. It was the devil working through sinful men who persecuted the early Apostles and killed every one of the 11 Apostles plus the Apostle Paul (see the article entitled, “satan desires thee”, http://www.faithwriters.com/article-details.php?id=81522). These very Scribes were in danger of eternal destruction because they were attributing God the Holy Spirits work of redemption, healing souls, and making men and women new creatures in Jesus Christ to the devil and that would be the unpardonable sin. For it is only through the regenerating power of God the Holy Spirit that our Lord Jesus can bind the devil over the lives of individual men and women.

John 12:31 Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. NKJV

1 John 4:4-6 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them. We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. NKJV

“We are evidently no friends of Satan. Like the kings of this world, he wars not against his own subjects. The very fact that he assaults us should fill our minds with hope.” J. C. Ryle

“We look upon the enemy of our souls as a conquered foe, so he is, but only to God, not to us.” Oswald Chambers

“I’m not afraid of the devil. The devil can handle me – he’s got judo I never heard of. But he can’t handle the One to whom I’m joined; he can’t handle the One to whom I’m united; he can’t handle the One whose nature dwells in my nature.” A. W. Tozer

“Hell is the highest reward that the devil can offer you for being a servant of his.” Billy Sunday

“Satan rules all men that are in his kingdom. Some he rules through lust. Some he rules through covetousness. Some he rules through appetite. Some he rules by their temper, but he rules them. And none will ever seek to be delivered until they get their eyes open and see that they have been taken captive.” D. L. Moody

Amen...
