Jesus Explains the Apostasy before His 2nd Coming

Matthew 24:10-14 “And then many will be offended {and} repelled {and} will begin to distrust {and} desert [Him Whom they ought to trust and obey] {and} will stumble and fall away and betray one another {and} pursue one another with hatred. And many false prophets will rise up and deceive {and} lead many into error. And the love of the great body of people will grow cold because of the multiplied lawlessness {and} iniquity, But he who endures to the end will be saved. And this good news of the kingdom (the Gospel) will be preached throughout the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then will come the end.” QAB

The Lord Jesus Christ will first come and snatch away His True Church consisting of those that have been regenerated and born again. All of the children of God who are watching and keeping sober live in anticipation of our Blessed Lord Jesus’ second coming to the earth to rule in Righteousness and to be Glorified in us His saints. The Lord Jesus explains the many events to the early Apostles that will take place before He comes with accompanying signs they should be looking for during the course of their lives. One of the biggest signs our Lord spoke of prior to Him coming to rapture us up to be with Him is a falling away from the true faith once and for all handed down to the saints (Apostasy). The Apostle Paul writing to the Thessalonian brothers and sisters wanted them to not be alarmed or deceived about our Lord’s second coming and he said, “For that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first.”

Deuteronomy 13:3 You shall not listen to the words of that prophet or to that dreamer of dreams. For the Lord your God is testing you to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your [mind and] heart and with your entire being. QAB

Therefore, the Apostasy must be of the signs of His second coming the most important. The discourse our Lord has with these original Apostles serves to further confirm that it is not His intention for any of His brethren to look too far into the future and fix their focus or energy there, but because of Apostasy and deception He desires us to cultivate a moment by moment daily communion with Him. It would have only discouraged these men if they knew that it would be over 2,000 years and our Lord still would be reigning from His Throne of Grace at the Father’s Right hand. We all who love the Lord Jesus Christ must live every day as if He will rapture us that very day. The type of people we should be everyday are people living holy and godly lives as we look for our Lord’s appearance and in so doing we will help to hasten His coming. During those early days of the Church of Jesus Christ, the Apostle John spoke of many anti-christ already in the world and they surely saw the beginning of the falling away in those early days. The Apostle Peter also spoke of the horrible destruction that would be wrought by these people in the visible Church.

2 Peter 2:1-3 BUT ALSO [in those days] there arose false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among yourselves, who will subtly {and} stealthily introduce heretical doctrines (destructive heresies), even denying {and} disowning the Master Who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their immoral ways {and} lascivious doings; because of them the true Way will be maligned {and} defamed. And in their covetousness (lust, greed) they will exploit you with false (cunning) arguments. From of old the sentence [of condemnation] for them has not been idle; their destruction (eternal misery) has not been asleep. QAB

The English word offended our Lord used in Matthew 24:10 comes from the Greek word skandalizo, which means to entrap, that is, to trip up, to stumble, or entice to sin, Apostasy or displeasure; make to offend. The Apostle Paul used the phrase “a falling away” in 2 Thessalonians 2:3 and that English phrase of words comes from the one Greek word apostasia, which means a defection from truth. When we read the above passage of Scripture from the Apostle Peter and what the Apostle Paul wrote to the Thessalonians and dig into the definition of the word our Lord used we can see that He continued to translate the same message through them as He spoke from His own lips, because He wanted them as well as us today to be very sober, vigilant, and watchful because our adversary the devil does not have horns and a tail with a pitch fork, but on the contrary the devil is in many Church buildings every week preaching and teaching lies that will eternally dam the souls of men, women, boys and girls. These people are nice, intelligent, and successful at presenting their great swelling words to many unsuspecting souls looking for an easy message without the daily bearing of their cross for Jesus Christ. They are anti-christ that the Apostle John spoke of and the false prophets our Lord refers to in Matthew 24:11.

Jeremiah 23:16 Thus says the Lord of hosts: Do not listen to the words of the [false] prophets who prophesy to you. They teach you vanity (emptiness, falsity, and futility) {and} fill you with vain hopes; they speak a vision of their own minds and not from the mouth of the Lord. QAB

Ezekiel 13:6 They have seen falsehood and lying divination, saying, The Lord says; but the Lord has not sent them. Yet they have hoped {and} made men to hope for the confirmation of their word. QAB

Remember these words from our Lord when He said, “Enter through the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and spacious {and} broad is the way that leads away to destruction, and many are those who are entering through it. But the gate is narrow (contracted by pressure) and the way is straitened {and} compressed that leads away to life, and few are those who find it.” The way of those who have apostasia and skandalizo is the wide gate or wide road our Lord speaks of here that appears to lead to Heaven, but it does not. The indulgence of sin is what these men and women preach and teach (being under grace) to people and it is a contributor of the abounding increase in the lawlessness in society spoken of by our Lord in Matthew 24:12, because many visible Churches that can be seen by the world are not our Lord’s true Church and those visible Churches serve more to be a stumbling block to those still lost in the world rather than salt and light. It is the Laodicean Church of health, wealth, and prosperity, rich and in need of nothing and our Lord said that visible Church was wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked and made Him want to vomit. It is the seat of liberalism, legalism, and license and the enemy of the souls of men and women has lodged himself in these schools, ministries, churches, and other “Christian” organizations and he works to keep people blind from the simplicity of the gospel of repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, but the end for these deceivers is sure, swift, and sorrowful as they are ushered into the place where their spiritual father satan will reside for all eternity.

2 Corinthians 11:13-15 For such men are false apostles [spurious, counterfeits], deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles (special messengers) of Christ (the Messiah). And it is no wonder, for satan himself masquerades as an angel of light; So it is not surprising if his servants also masquerade as ministers of righteousness. [But] their end will correspond with their deeds. QAB

1 John 2:26 I write this to you with reference to those who would deceive you [seduce and lead you astray]. QAB

Revelation 19:20 And the beast was seized {and} overpowered, and with him the false prophet who in his presence had worked wonders {and} performed miracles by which he led astray those who had accepted {or} permitted to be placed upon them the stamp (mark) of the beast and those who paid homage {and} gave divine honors to his statue. Both of them were hurled alive into the fiery lake that burns {and} blazes with brimstone. QAB

“The devil and his instruments may prevail far in deceiving poor souls; few find the strait gate, but many are drawn into the broad way; many will be imposed upon by their signs and wonders, and many drawn in by the hopes of deliverance from their oppressions. Note, Neither miracles nor multitudes are certain signs of a true church.” Matthew Henry 1662-1714

“No one sets out to become an apostate – it’s never the result of one abrupt, drastic turn away from the Lord. Instead, apostasy is most often the product of a pattern of sinful compromises that harden and gradually steer a professing believer away from the truth.” John MacArthur

“Only a love for the truth and a willingness to do what the Word of God says will preserve us from the apostasy that Scripture tells us will overtake the world.” T. A. McMahon

If you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ and His amazing healing power, pray this from your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ (you speaking directly to Him), Dear Lord Jesus, I confess to You that I am a sinner and I need Your forgiveness. I believe You shed Your Blood and died for my sins. I believe that You rose from the dead proving that You alone are God. I repent of my sins. I want to turn from my sins. I ask You Dear Lord Jesus to come into my heart and take control of my life. I want You to be my Lord, Savior, and my God. Amen...

Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem

Matthew 23:37-39 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate; for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’” NKJV

Any Parent can testify of the extreme agony brought into their hearts when one of their beloved children is going down a path that will result in certain disaster. The love the Parent has for their child compels them to say or do anything within their power to convince the son or daughter to turn around and walk back to the way that will bring about safety. However, despite the constant and continual pleas from the Parent to the child to change, often those words are met with contempt or disregard and the child plunges head long in the way they would like to go and meet with tragic results. Matthew Chapter 23 is filled with a scathing tyrant our Lord unleashed upon the religious leaders of the Jews the Scribes and Pharisees condemning their hypocritical, self-righteous, greedy, self-indulgent, extortive, unclean, sinful, and lawless hearts while they were always wrapped up in their long flowing religious robes appearing to be such holy men to the common Jews.

Nehemiah 9:26 Nevertheless they were disobedient And rebelled against You, Cast Your law behind their backs And killed Your prophets, who testified against them To turn them to Yourself; And they worked great provocations. NKJV

In stark contrast to the 8 blesses He spoke of to the multitudes and His disciples as He went upon a mountain and taught them, our Lord pronounces 8 woe’s to these religious leaders of the Jewish people. Our Lord was righteously angry at how they had turned the Law that He gave Moses into such hard rules and rituals that only served to keep people who desired a real relationship and communion with YAHWEH away from knowing and experiencing Him. Our Lord took them to the woodshed and opened their hearts up and showed them who they really were not so as just to hurt them, but that they would see their need for Him and turn to Him.

Jeremiah 4:14 O Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, That you may be saved. How long shall your evil thoughts lodge within you? NKJV

Many of His parables He spoke earlier in their presence also was so they would see the wickedness of their hearts. In the Old Testament, Joseph who was treated horribly by his brothers and sold into slavery by them, when they had to stand before him as he was now ruler in Egypt next to Pharaoh, Joseph treated his brothers roughly and after doing so would go into another room and weep profusely and then return to his brothers and treat them roughly again and go away and weep some more. Like Joseph our Lord did not leave Heaven and come to earth the first time to destroy men’s lives, but He came to save them. Our Lord saw that these people that He so loved did not want Him and had not understood what the Old Testament Prophets spoke concerning His first coming. All of this was said to them from the heart of their King who deeply loved them and saw what their rejection of Him would do to them as the Roman General Titus in A.D. 70 would destroy the city and the Jewish Temple. Like Jerusalem rejected the Lord Jesus Christ, many Gentiles today after His death on the cross, burial, and resurrection from the dead reject or resist His sacrifice for their sins and thousands die every day apart from Him and He weeps over their unwillingness to come to Him in repentance and faith.

Matthew 11:28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. NKJV

John 5:40 And still you are not willing [but refuse] to come to Me, so that you might have life. QAB

“When we stray from His presence, He longs for you to come back. He weeps that you are missing out on His love, protection and provision. He throws His arms open, runs toward you, gathers you up, and welcomes you home.” Dr. Charles Stanley

“Love your fellowmen, and cry about them if you cannot bring them to Christ. If you cannot save them, you can weep over them. If you cannot give them a drop of cold water in hell, you can give them your heart's tears while they are still in this body.” “The man who cannot weep cannot preach. At least, if he never feels tears within, even if they do not show themselves without, he can scarcely be the man to handle such themes as those which God has committed to his people's charge.” Charles Spurgeon

“Many mourn for their sins that do not truly repent of them, weep bitterly for them, and yet continue in love and league with them.” Matthew Henry

Jesus Explains Man’s Death and Resurrection

Matthew 22:28-33 “Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.” Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in Heaven. But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’ ? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at His teaching. NKJV

Death is the absolute certainty for every human being. However, we only have to look around us every day to see men, women, boys, and girls living each moment as if death will never come to them. The recent rape case of the two teenagers in Ohio is but a snap shot of the activities of many youth in this country in this present generation and past generations and sadly will be so for future generations to come. I recall my youth and how I lived in such a manner of sex, drugs, alcohol, and partying believing I was invincible and that nothing could harm me. Despite witnessing people of my own age die in car accidents, or being shot to death, or overdosing on some drug or alcohol it did not stop my false belief of it won’t happen to me. I continually put myself in harm’s way testing and tempting God for many decades because I loved my rebellion and my iniquity. I wanted to continue to fill up the cup of my iniquity to the brim each and every day despite the reality of my death and my standing before God.

The short film I today enjoy watching and have seen many times entitled “The Book and the Rose” is based on a book or short story written by Max Lucado. There is a quote from this short film that says, “Tell me who you love, and I will tell you who you are.” The quote from this short film is so very true and it is what shapes the way men, women, boys, and girls live out their daily lives until their certain death manifest. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was always confronted by people with questions that were meant to stump Him (mainly from people who did not recognize Him to be God) and cause Him to be entangled in His speech or response. The Sadducees as we learned earlier in this gospel record of the Apostle Matthew were the religious Jewish sect that our Lord warned His followers to beware of their leaven or teaching of liberalism.

Because they said and believed that when people die that is it and there will be no resurrection, they endeavored to live and teach others to do so with the mind set of eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow you die. Because they thought that this life was all there was they ordained and permitted any type of sinful indulgences men’s heart were drawn to. They did however, teach and endeavor to adhere to the Law of Moses especially when it came to the biggest of sins like the killing of another for no reason, but the passions of the flesh in sex and drink were left up to the discretion of the individual so long as he did not hurt others in what he practiced. These men came to our Lord with the insincere question of who will a women be married to when she had been married on earth to seven different men who were brothers. Their problem like the problem that still persists today is the ignorance of man to God’s Word and his misguided view of God’s true power.

Acts 26:8 Why should it be thought incredible by you that God raises the dead? NKJV

Like the Sadducees of old in Jerusalem, we have modern day Sadducees who do not believe there is anything after death and therefore their daily life is but a continuous array of sinful indulgence after sinful indulgence with the thought of no payday approaching. The Sadducees were of the school of Epicurus and because of their high status in society they looked at themselves as being blessed of God because of the material things they had in their earthly life. Listen to this excerpt from the Book my Lord Jesus wrote through me entitled “Silent Assassins of the Soul” about the Epicureans and their founder Epicurus and you will see that these people are still alive and well today:

““Epicureanism flourished as both a school of philosophy and a way of life from the end of the 4th century B.C. until at least the 3rd century A.D. and was rooted in a philosophical conception of the Universe that appealed more to intellectuals than to the general populace. Epicurus (342 B.C.-270 B.C.), the founder of this philosophy placed great emphasis on the necessity of freeing humanity from its two greatest fears: the fear of the gods and the fear of death. Without denying the existence of the gods or the value of religion, Epicurus maintained that the gods had no interest in nor relation to human affairs and that death is simply the end of life. There is no next life. Starting in common sense and the infallibility of sensation, Epicurus identified good with pleasure and evil with pain. It follows from this premise that the greatest good is the maximum amount of pleasure. If pleasure is good, more pleasure is better (i.e., more good). Epicureanism is a philosophy of sensual pleasure.” In his perpetual quest to study, analyze, and figure himself out without God, man has come to some rather bizarre conclusions.””

You see many people also back then as well as today claimed or thought they could communicate with the dead. We recall the episode with king Saul’s visitation to the witch of Endor hoping she could conjure or call up the then dead Prophet Samuel that he might receive some guidance from him in his upcoming battle. However, the true God (YAHWEH) allowed this man to be deceived by satan by allowing the witch to speak with a familiar demon impersonating Samuel and pronounce to Saul his own death the next day. Many today as then are deceived like Saul by listening to those who think that they can communicate with those who have died and learn something from them about life on the other side of death.

Never go to or listen to any Medium/Witch they cannot communicate with a dead human being they only hear from demons, therefore they need to repent and turn from their sins or if not they will perish. I don’t know if in the time of the Sadducees there were people who wrote or spoke of some near death experiences or not, but I do know that today the Book Stores are filled with stories from adults and even children with claims of after their death going to Heaven or Hell and what they saw and heard in one of those locations. I do not believe any of their accounts because it contradicts with the Word of God. However, the Scriptures tell us of two men (Enoch and Elijah) who did not die but were taken up or translated into Paradise by God and neither one of them were allowed to come back and tell of Heaven. The Apostle Paul was stoned to death and he spoke of that experience in the following text of Scripture and in so doing he did not even want to openly acknowledge that he was the man taken into the throne room of Heaven.
2 Corinthians 12:1-4 It is doubtless not profitable for me to boast. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord: I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago --- whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows --- such a one was caught up to the third Heaven. And I know such a man --- whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows ---how he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter. NKJV

Our Lord resurrected Paul and lifted him up into the throne room and yet when Paul wrote of it he said what he saw and heard was not lawful to speak about and it was beyond the power of man to put into words. Our Lord reveals the truth to the Sadducees about the death of the human body by first looking beyond the insincerity of their question (because they did not believe in the human body being resurrected) and revealing to them that to be in the presence of Holy God brings infinite more pleasure than all human pleasures we have been allowed to enjoy on earth such as marriage and sexual relations in marriage. The Sadducees were using their finite mind and trying to relate it to an Infinite God who is so powerful that He is able and capable of holding His entire Universe together and surely He will be able to relocate every unique individual human bodies dust particles and bring them all back together to raise from the dead to be judged by Him. Our Lord destroys the error that still today exist and that is the falsehood of the soul sleeping at death.

Jeremiah 32:17 Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the Heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You. NKJV

John 5:21 “For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will.” NKJV

John 5:28-29 “Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth --- those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.” NKJV

Colossians 1:17 And He is before all things, and by Him all things consist. KJV

Revelation 20:12-13 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. NKJV

Our Lord revealed to them the reality of angels and that they do not reproduce because they do not have forms of a lower earthly human nature and therefore, everyone that becomes a son of God will be equal to the angels by having a spiritual body able to live in the presence of God. All will be raised from the dead to stand before God. Abraham’s body had been in the grave over 300 years prior to this revelation given to Moses of God being the God of Abraham. This is because Abraham’s soul was alive and in the very presence of YAHWEH for every day of those 300 plus years. Our Lord also showed that every person that has ever lived lives to God whether in His presence (in Heaven) or away from His presence (in Hell) no one ever dies and goes out of existence. The Lord Jesus wanted these men and all reading this today 2,000 years later to be sure that at the moment of your birth you became an eternal soul that will never die but live forever, you choose your address.

Luke 20:38 “For He is not the God of the dead but of the living, for all live to Him.” NKJV

“It is hard to have patience with people who say "There is no death" or "Death doesn’t matter." There is death. And whatever is matters. And whatever happens has consequences, and it and they are irrevocable and irreversible. You might as well say that birth doesn’t matter.” C. S. Lewis

“Where sin has been removed death can only interrupt the earthly life and usher in the Heavenly.” John MacArthur

“Every man must do two things alone; he must do his own believing and his own dying.” Martin Luther

“He whose head is in Heaven need not fear to put his feet into the grave.” Matthew Henry

“There is an essential difference between the decease of the godly and the death of the ungodly. Death comes to the ungodly man as a penal infliction, but to the righteous as a summons to his Father’s palace. To the sinner it is an execution, to the saint an undressing from his sins and infirmities. Death to the wicked is the King of terrors. Death to the saint is the end of terrors, the commencement of glory.” Charles Spurgeon

“There is nothing more tragic than to come to the end of life and know we have been on the wrong course.” Watchman Nee

“If you live wrong you can’t die right.” Billy Sunday

If you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ and His amazing healing power, pray this from your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ (you speaking directly to Him), Dear Lord Jesus, I confess to You that I am a sinner and I need Your forgiveness. I believe You shed Your Blood and died for my sins. I believe that You rose from the dead proving that You alone are God. I repent of my sins. I want to turn from my sins. Jesus the Healing Stone and the Hurting Stone

Matthew 21:44 And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder. NKJV

Many years ago there was no refrigeration so the people who went to hunt game animals needed to be able to preserve their meat for long periods of time. Salt was discovered to be a preserver and it was used to make large amounts of meat last for longer periods of time before it would rotten. Salt was also used as an antiseptic to keep wounds from getting infected with something that would damage the limb and perhaps cause it to require amputation. The salt when applied inside an open wound or deep cut would burn or hurt terribly but the pain was endured in order that the wound might be healed. There are many other things or creatures that act in a twofold capacity to preserve or destroy. I think of the deserts where many poison scorpions reside. One sting from the scorpion’s tail to a man could result in death, but that same scorpion if captured and handled properly by that same man could be a source of food/nourishment to his body if he is stranded in the desert and needs to survive.

Our Lord Jesus Christ speaks of Himself as such a One that will serve to heal many and bring many sons to glory, while He will literally crush (like a huge boulder) many souls that reject or resist Him as the only way to wholeness. In the Scripture Matthew 21:44 in the first half of the passage, our Lord uses the Greek word sunthlao, which means to dash together; to break; denoting union by association, companionship, possession, and resemblance. He spoke this to the religious leaders after He had just given them two parables; the first parable was a simple illustration of an obedient son and a disobedient son which they clearly understood.

Our Lord wanted them to see their disobedience to the message of repentance trumpeted to them by John the Baptist and at the same time see how those people that they looked down on, called sinners, and despised heard, understood, saw their woeful condition and were convicted and obeyed the message of repentance. The second parable they really understood because it was a picture of what they and their forefathers did to every true Prophet of God sent to them by YAHWEH. Now YAHWEH is here standing before them not speaking through a Prophet but The Prophet literally and they are stumbling over their only means of spiritual healing. So our Lord said in the first half of this passage that many will see their broken spiritual and sinful condition and fall on This Stone (Jesus) and be completely healed. They will have as the Word says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” See the article entitled “The New Life”,  http://www.faithwriters.com/article-details.php?id=79783).

Isaiah 66:2 “But this is the man to whom I will look {and} have regard: he who is humble and of a broken {or} wounded spirit, and who trembles at My word {and} reveres My commands.” QAB

Jeremiah 23:29 Is not My word like fire [that consumes all that cannot endure the test]? says the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks in pieces the rock [of most stubborn resistance]? QAB

Matthew 13:23 “But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.” NKJV

Romans 9:33 As it is written, Behold I am laying in Zion a Stone that will make men stumble, a Rock that will make them fall; but he who believes in Him [who adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Him] shall not be put to shame {nor} be disappointed in his expectations. QAB

Likewise just as the religious Jews standing before our Lord stumbled over Him so will many of the multitudes even be swayed by the glitter of the world and human efforts of religion and spirituality all the while stumbling over the only Way of healing in so doing will be hurt by the One who desired to heal them. In the second half of Matthew 21:44, our Lord used the Greek word pipto peto, which means to literally fall on or alight on. This is where the stone that can heal can also hurt. He speaks of judgment for the rejecters and resistors of Him being the only way to Heaven and the only source of true spiritual life, and the only truth in the entire universe. Our Lord is not in competition with anyone or anything for the satisfaction of the souls of men. The grinding into powder is not complete annihilation as some have interpreted, but it speaks of that eternal place where the sins that men and women would not relinquish and that they presumed gave them much pleasure (though it were temporary) will now forever be like a continuous grinding millstone on grain that crushes them over and over and over with guilt and regret in hell never bringing satisfaction but torment. See the article entitled “The Natural Man”, http://www.faithwriters.com/article-details.php?id=80381.

Isaiah 57:9 And thou wentest to the king with ointment, and didst increase thy perfumes, and didst send thy messengers far off, and didst debase thyself even unto hell. KJV

Matthew 13:40-42 Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age. The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. NKJV

2 Corinthians 4:3-4 But even if our Gospel (the glad tidings) also be hidden (obscured and covered up with a veil that hinders the knowledge of God), it is hidden [only] to those who are perishing {and} obscured [only] to those who are spiritually dying {and} veiled [only] to those who are lost. For the god of this world has blinded the unbelievers’ minds [that they should not discern the truth], preventing them from seeing the illuminating light of the Gospel of the glory of Christ (the Messiah), Who is the Image {and} Likeness of God. QAB

“The human heart is like the millstone in a mill; when you put wheat under it, it turns and grinds the wheat into flour. If you put no wheat in, it still grinds on, but then it is itself it grinds and slowly wears away.” Martin Luther 1483-1546

“The law breaks the hard heart, but the gospel melts it. A stone duly broken, may be still a hard stone; but the gospel melts.” Ralph Erskine 1685-1752

Amen...

Jesus Paints another Picture of Salvation

This story our Lord tells to His disciples comes right after His discourse with the rich young man who went away from Him sad and lost eternally because he was unwilling to repent of his sin of covetousness. The workers in the vineyard are all hand-picked by the landowner as He goes out in the marketplace. This is a picture of the Sovereign Election of those whom our Lord Jesus Christ will save. The contrast of this story with the conversation with the rich young man is striking because we saw clearly that he wanted to know what he needed to do to gain salvation, but our Lord in this parable shows clearly that salvation is not about what any person can do but it is all of the Sovereign Election of God. Religion teaches religious people to always try and earn favor with God, which as we saw with the rich young man is not possible (see the article entitled “Favor with God” http://www.faithwriters.com/article-details.php?id=93427).

Romans 9:15-16 For He says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion.” So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy. NJKV

The land owner finds men standing idle in the marketplace (which pictures those still in the world) and calls them to himself to come and work for him. This is exactly how our Lord called the very man who is the instrument being used by God the Holy Spirit to write this gospel account (the Apostle Matthew). Our Lord said to him simply, “Matthew, follow Me”, and Matthew got up from his tax collecting table and followed the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the saving call received by every one of His true disciples from the youngest to the oldest. The parable states that the landowner chose some to come and work in his vineyard early in the morning. This tells us that our Lord Jesus Christ bids or summons some to come to Him at a very young age, how about even while they are still in their Mother’s womb. Of course the little one in the womb is not conscience of it, but our Lord will come to each of His little ones and open their spiritual eyes.

Jeremiah 1:4-5 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” NKJV

The land owner kept going out into the marketplace at the third hour, the sixth hour, the ninth hour, and finally the eleventh hour until he had found and hired the last laborer to go into his vineyard. The effectual call of salvation from our Lord Jesus Christ comes for some at different stages of life as early as 7 years old to as old as 120 years old. The hour of grace is now open for all from the womb to the grave to call on the Lord Jesus to be saved, but soon the door of grace is going to close just like the work day must come to an end, so will the period of grace for unbelievers/lost. However, for many centuries educated and non-educated people have mocked at the second coming of our Lord saying the time has been so long He surely must not have meant He was literally going to return to the earth again. It is something that one living in sin and pleasure of the world would like to ignore or dismiss altogether, but God resides in eternity and time does not constrain Him. All things happen according to His perfect will and timing and since He (by His word) has said He will return to judge the earth in Righteousness, we can be certain that He will do just as He said He would.

2 Peter 3:1-8 Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior, knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. NKJV

Now the land owner at the end of the work day has his steward to call all of the workers in to pay them the wage agreed upon. When he called the last hired to be paid first, he gave them one denarius and they only worked in the vineyard for only one hour and this was looked upon by those called early in the morning as surely to justify them receiving more than the last seeing they had worked longer or all day. However, the land owner rebuked those men and calls them evil for thinking they can dictate to him what he wills to do with his own possessions. Our Lord calls those to Himself as He wills and how He wills and salvation is the same free gift of receiving grace through faith no matter what point in their life it comes. The thief on the cross lived his entire life serving sin and was saved on the earth for maybe a couple of hours before he went to Paradise with Jesus. There is nothing that anyone can DO to make God save them, but only when you recognize and no longer rationalize the fact of your sinfulness, then and only then will Christ make you brand new in Him by His blood.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. NKJV

1 Timothy 14-16 And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life. NKJV

“Is it not wonderful news to believe that salvation lies outside ourselves?” Martin Luther

“A child of five, if properly instructed, can as truly believe and be regenerated as an adult.” Charles Spurgeon

“The grace of God hath power to bring salvation to all men, and if a man is unsaved it is because he wants to work it out; he wants to receive salvation in some other way than God’s way; but we are told that “he that climbeth up another way, the same is a thief and a robber.” D. L. Moody

“You could not be saved through any effort of your own, but now that you are saved it is necessary for you to put forward every effort you can to glorify Him.” Harry Ironside

Jesus shows the Futility of Salvation by Human Effort

Matthew 19:16 Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?” NKJV

The story of the rich young ruler coming to our Lord Jesus Christ is so well known even non-believers have heard about it. Here was a young man considered rich by all who knew him or knew of him. How he got his wealth was not disclosed for us or what he did with his wealth on a regular basis is also information we were not given. Most of us have placed our focus on his earthly wealth and rightly so, but that is not initially where our Lord focused His attention. Although the man’s wealth was near and dear to him, he also had a misguided view of himself morally and spiritually.

This young man no doubt grew up in a family with a Father and Mother who were devout Jews who went to the synagogue regularly and took him along. The young man probably knew much of the Torah (the first five books of the Old Testament) or at least the main stories of the origin, pilgrimage, struggles, and overall history of the Jewish people. The young man probably no doubt was circumcised on the eighth day and knew the tribe that made up his family heritage. The young man probably heard the teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees and came down on the side of the Pharisees because he believed in life after death as did the Pharisees.

The question he asked our Lord reveals what he had been taught all of his life and he now wanted this new Rabbi that was growing more and more popular among the common people to confirm his belief and give him a list of “good things” he could do to assure eternal life for him in heaven. When our Lord ran through the commandments with him, he confidently asserted the certainty that he had kept all of them from his youth. This man was not trying to be pious. In reality, he truly believed he had kept them all because he no doubt pattern his religious life after that of his Father and Mother as well as the other men and women of the Synagogue he regularly attended. The young man truly believed he was a “good person” and he meant no disrespect to our Lord or any of the people standing around listening.

The sin of human “goodness” is probably the worse sin on the planet next to unbelief/atheism. It is the sin practiced every single day for years and centuries in Synagogues, Muslim Temples, Churches, and other places of religious worship. It has always been easy for the “good person” to look inwardly and not see the sin hidden down deep in the heart that is so desperately wicked. Jeremiah said our human hearts are so sin sick that we don’t even know them. Such was the case of this young man and many of the people of his family, friends, and fellowship that really did not understand how depraved we all are from the womb. This is why our Lord said according to Marks account of this discord, “He looked at him and loved him.” Our Lord sees the humanly sweetest, dearest, and kindest person on this earth apart from the Holy Spirit’s regeneration and the new birth as depraved. Listen to the words our Lord gave the Prophet Isaiah many centuries before He ever was born of a virgin, died on the cross, and rose the third day about the works or deeds of the “good person”:

Isaiah 64:6 For we have all become like one who is unclean [ceremonially, like a leper], and all our righteousness (our best deeds of rightness and justice) is like filthy rags {or} a polluted garment; we all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away [far from God's favor, hurrying us toward destruction]. QAB

Please listen to the words of the Prophet if you are counting on your Church/Denomination membership, your giving to a charity, your good deeds outweighing your bad deeds, water baptism or infant baptism, your outward keeping of the Ten Commandments, any religious rituals observed daily, weekly, monthly or yearly please stop and turn around and look up at the cross of Calvary. The Lord Jesus Christ shattered this young man’s perceived “goodness” by reaching into his heart and exposing his covetousness. The first sin we commit condemns us all before God the Father for the wages of sin is death, but the sin we hold onto, we grip tightly, we justify vainly, we practice regularly, or we obstinately won’t turn from is the sin that will keep any person from the regenerating work of God the Holy Spirit through the gospel of Jesus Christ because He (God the Holy Spirit) is here now to convict of sin and God the Father right now requires all men to repent of sin (turn from it) or all will go away from the Lord Jesus Christ just as this rich young man did because he would not let go of his sin of covetousness.

Job 35:6-7 If you have sinned, how does that affect God? And if your transgressions are multiplied, what have you done to Him? If you are righteous, what do you [by that] give God? Or what does He receive from your hand? QAB

Our Lord made this very clear to the disciples when they realized that this perceived “good man” was not going to be saved. They were perplexed and wondered, if he can’t be saved and we thought of  him as a “good man”, then who can be saved. Our Lord said, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Salvation from sin is not the work of any man’s human effort, but it is the Divine work of a loving God that intervenes in the life of a man or woman and recreates them internally and then adopts them as His son or daughter giving them Resurrection Life that enables them to live differently for the rest of their earthly life and then makes them completely perfect after death. If anyone is reading this and the Spirit of God has pricked your heart and made you agitated because you consider yourself to be a “good person”, then rejoice because He is beginning the work of conviction that I pray will spring forth into eternal life today bringing you to Jesus Christ The Only “GOOD PERSON”.

“Good works do not make a good man, but a good man does good works.” Martin Luther

Jesus Warns against causing others to Sin

Matthew 18:6-7 “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!” NKJV

Sin is the great enemy of man and the cause of all the sickness, sorrow, and suffering in our present world. For the unregenerate man sin is enslaving. For the man regenerated by the Spirit of God living by and under grace, the enslavement to sin has been destroyed, but the daily battle with sin continues throughout our life of being sanctified by Him. The child of God fights sin daily, but he has been given a disposition from our Lord to hate sin and evil. We are told over and over by the Apostles Paul, Peter, and John to not sin or in some places to put off the old man and put on the new man or to mortify/put to death our members on the earth or to no longer present our members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin but present our members as instruments of righteousness to God.

The New Testament is saturated with this language and to not be aware of it means only to be void of reading the Word of God. To deny that this is the theme throughout the New Covenant would be to deny the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit and deny the Scripture as being God’s own inerrant Words. As we read through the Gospels we find occasions where our Lord Jesus displayed His Righteous Indignation about a matter. When He wanted to heal a man with a withered hand on the Sabbath in the Synagogue, He asked the people if it were lawful for Him to do this and they kept silent. Our Lord turned to the Jewish people and looked at them with anger over the hardness of their hearts because they were more concerned with tradition and rule keeping on the Sabbath, that they placed that above the man being healed by our Lord.

Our Lord never displayed anger when He was attacked personally. As the Scripture states, “When He was reviled He did not revile in return; when He suffered He did not threaten” but when His Father was being dishonored or His word being misrepresented our Lord was very indignant. The words our Lord uses in the above Scripture text are the most serious, scary, and stern words He ever used when addressing any of the disciples except maybe when He turned and looked at Peter and said, “Get behind Me, satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.” As we walk with our Lord, each of us can only repent of our own sin against the Lord Jesus Christ and we cannot repent for another person’s sin. Therefore, I believe it is very offensive to Him when someone who uses His name and identifies themselves with Him leads others into sin and error. The following passages of Scripture are evidence of God the Holy Spirit bringing the Words of our Lord into remembrance and the seriousness it resonates in the heart of Christ Jesus our Lord to each of the New Testament writers:

Romans 14:13 Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother's way. NKJV

Romans 15:1-3 We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. For even Christ pleased not Himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me. KJV

1 Corinthians 8:12-13 But when you thus sin against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never again eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble. NKJV

1 Corinthians 10:32-33 Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God, just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved. NKJV

1 Corinthians 15:33-34 Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.” Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame. NKJV

These are just some examples of how our love for other brothers and sisters in the mystical body of our Lord Jesus Christ should constrain and compel us not in any manner to cause any of them to sin by our words, deeds, and by our overall lifestyle. This is why our Lord spoke such strong language to drive home His point of wanting His true disciples to live above reproach and blameless in this world of woe. He wanted us to see sin the way He sees sin and in so doing painted a very graphic picture by using the things that we can use to advance in making very much of sinning out of our flesh. Who among us does not view their eyes and the ability to see out of them with great value and worth, to all of us I say they would be considered priceless. Our hands and feet give us mobility here on this earth and serve us in so many ways we take for granted and can also be occupied in stealing, masturbation, fighting and many other sins and they too are priceless to us. Now was our Lord speaking the following words literally, no but His Words paint a clear picture of the value of a life abiding in Him verses a life under the dominion of sin. Sin is no joke to Jesus Christ our Lord. He can see before we ever commit an act of sin the horrible consequences that one sin will cause for a person, a family, and in many cases many generations of a family (see the article or short story entitled “Paralyzed by Sin” (http://www.faithwriters.com/article-details.php?id=96798).

Matthew 18:8-9 “If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the everlasting fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire.” NKJV

The Lord Jesus Christ knew certainly that offenses or causes to sin or enticements to sin would surely be hurled repeatedly at them and us from the world at large, but He wanted to warn them and us of the wolves dressed up in sheep clothing, the spots in our love feast who would feast with us without fear, living according to their own lust, sensual persons serving only their own interest, and flattering true disciples to gain some sort of advantage. These are people, who appear to know our Lord Jesus and have a form of godliness, but they are devoid of the power of godliness and we are to turn away from these people because their goal is to lead us into satisfying the flesh all the while with the illusion of still serving God. Some of them are the spirituality crowd who find their way into the Church of God holding onto the false spirituality trying to mix it with Jesus Christ and like Jannes and Jambres mentioned below they are magicians or sorcerers like Simon in the Book of Acts Chapter 8 who wanted to buy the power of the Holy Spirit (read the whole story there).

2 Timothy 3:6-9 For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith; but they will progress no further, for their folly will be manifest to all, as theirs also was. NKJV

2 Thessalonians 1:6-9 Since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you, and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from Heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power. NKJV

“Every Christian will readily allow that sin is insidious, but it is one thing to recognize this in theory and quite another to be regulated by it in practice.” A. W. Pink

“None can hate [sin] but those that love the law of God; for all hatred comes from love. A natural man may be angry with his sin, but hate it he cannot; nay, he may leave it, but not loathe it; if he did, he would loathe all sin as well as any one sin.” Abraham Wright 1611-1690

Amen...
