The Best Road to Travel

Psalm 119:133 Direct my steps by Your word, And let no iniquity have dominion over me. NKJV
Every human being on this planet knows what it means in the natural to travel down a road in order to reach a destination for business, personal, work, or other purposes. We have all spent much of our lives no matter the length of life here on earth traveling on man-made roads of some sort. However, there is also a spiritual road we can travel to our benefit and delight, a good road, a blessed road, a road that leads to strong faith, good conduct, and purity found in a heart yielded to obedience to the Word of God. On this spiritual road we discover all the spiritual blessings in the heavenly places we have in Christ Jesus our Lord. It is like a cross country Holy Spirit led trip that never ends.

When our Lord Jesus was tempted to sin and be disobedient in the wilderness by the devil, He resisted the devil not as God but as man filled with the Holy Spirit and He used the Word of God against the enemy. Our knowledge of the Word of God and its proper use by the leading of God the Holy Spirit will keep any sin from mastering, ruling, or controlling us at any point of our Christian pilgrimage.
The Bible is called by the Apostle Paul the sword of the Spirit. In order for us to use this sword in resisting temptation to sin, we must hide the Word in our hearts by prayer, reading, studying, and meditating on the Word every day. If the heart is filled with the Word of God then there will be no place that needs temporal satisfaction from sin. Paul wrote to Timothy that the Word of God is profitable and that it gives instruction in righteousness. Paul exhorted Timothy to take heed to his doctrine (teaching from the Word of God) and that he should give himself over to that entirely.

The best road traveled brings peace and a heart continually being cleansed from impurity. However, the way or road of sin is like a car having lost its brake function and speeding out of control, it will soon crash hard and hurt, injury, and even death will be the result. The Word of God has tremendous power. By Gods very Words He made everything in the heavens and on the earth. Therefore, His Words can frame and shape our hearts and our will to see His truth and the beauty in it for our benefit. There will always be exits on the road and we have the option to veer off onto one of those exits or stay on the best road to travel.
Matthew Henry has this to say of the Word of God, “There is no occasion for the writings of the philosopher, nor for rabbinical fables, nor popish legends, nor unwritten traditions, to make us perfect men of God, since the scripture answers all these ends and purposes. O that we may love our Bibles more, and keep closer to them than ever! and then shall we find the benefit and advantage designed thereby, and shall at last attain the happiness therein promised and assured to us.”

Sincerely in Christ,
