Letter to the Hebrews Volume 188

Sacrifices Pleasing to God Part 15

Hebrews 13:18-19 Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly. But I beseech you the rather to do this, that I may be restored to you the sooner. KJV

Now the πŸ“ writer of Hebrews begins his descent into the conclusion of his entire ✉ letter (Chapter 13 being the closing one) and the first thing he says as he begins his conclusion is that of asking them to pray for him, as it is written, "Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly. But I beseech you the rather to do this, that I may be restored to you the sooner." (Hebrews 13:18-19) (KJV). The prayers of a son or daughter of God the Father is the one thing that cannot ever be πŸ›‘ stopped by our enemy the πŸ‘Ώ devil. Every brother and sister 'in Christ' doing the will of God needs not only to πŸ™ pray for themselves/ourselves, but they/we also need the prayers of other members of Christ Mystical Body to go along with ours. There can never ever be too much praying to our Father in Heaven. This πŸ“ writer of Hebrews was undoubtedly facing very harsh, hard, and horrific persecution from the two-legged πŸ‘Ώ devils everywhere he went declaring the truth of the Word of God. It was then and it still is now the goal πŸ₯… of the enemy to harass the true servants of Christ on every turn in order to keep us from declaring the truth of the Gospel of Christ (which is the only truth) throughout the world. It is the 😈 devil's desire to see his πŸ€₯ lies spread about in the 🌎 earth more than the truth of God. Therefore, we find this πŸ“ writer requesting the prayers of other like minded sisters and brothers of our Lord Jesus Christ, so that he would be able to live out his divine destiny doing the will of God. The πŸ“ writer of Hebrews was persuaded of his desire, determination, and dedication to live honestly or in a good way among them as well as among the two-legged πŸ‘Ώ devils in the πŸ—Ί world, so he requested their prayers to God knowing that He hears His sons and daughters always and at all ⏲ times of the day or πŸŒƒ night.

Remember when the Apostle Peter and the Apostle John were threatened by the Sanhedrin Council and they came back to the other believers and they all with one accord prayed for boldness to declare the truth of God what happened, as it is written, "And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is: Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against His Christ. For of a truth against Thy Holy Child Jesus, whom Thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, For to do whatsoever Thy hand and Thy counsel determined before to be done. And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto Thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak Thy Word, By stretching forth Thine Hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the Name of Thy Holy Child Jesus. And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the Word of God with boldness." (Acts 4:24-31) (KJV). In war between Nations, the πŸ”« weapons are often times deployed from far away from the enemy with ballistic missiles and other type πŸ’£ bombs that can be launched from high above the ground by fighter jets or drones in order to render damage, decimation, and destuction to the 🎯 targets of the enemy. Likewise, in our spiritual warfare with the πŸ‘Ώ devil and his demons we too have a πŸ”« weapon in our arsenals that can hit the enemy from afar off and he has no radar or detection device to πŸ›‘ stop it or to intercept it and that is prayer (2 Corinthians 10:4 & James 5:16).

Here is what Matthew Henry had to say of Hebrews 13:18-19, "The Apostle recommends himself, and his fellow-sufferers, to the prayers of the Hebrew believers (Hebrews 13:18): 'Pray for us; for me and Timothy' (mentioned Hebrews 13:23), 'and for all those of us who labour in the ministry of the Gospel.' 1. This is one part of the duty which people owe to their ministers. Ministers need the prayers of the people; and the more earnestly the people pray for their ministers the more benefit they may expect to reap from their ministry. They should pray that God would teach those who are to teach them, that he would make them vigilant, and wise, and zealous, and successful - that He would assist them in all their labours, support them under all their burdens, and strengthen them under all their temptations. 2. There are good reasons why people should pray for their ministers; he mentions two: (1.) We trust we have a good conscience, etc., Hebrews 13:18. Many of the Jews had a bad opinion of Paul, because he, being a Hebrew of the Hebrews, had cast off the Levitical law and preached up Christ: now he here modestly asserts his own integrity: We trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly. We trust! he might have said, We know; but he chose to speak in a humble style, to teach us all not to be too confident of ourselves, but to maintain a godly jealousy over our own hearts. 'We trust we have a good conscience, an enlightened and well-informed conscience, a clean and pure conscience, a tender and faithful conscience, a conscience testifying for us, not against us: a good conscience in all things, in the duties both of the first and second table, towards God and towards men, and especially in all things pertaining to our ministry; we would act honestly and sincerely in all things.' Observe, [1.] A good conscience has a respect to all God's commands and all our duty. [2.] Those who have this good conscience, yet need the prayers of others. [3.] Conscientious ministers are public blessings, and deserve the prayers of the people. (2.) Another reason why he desires their prayers is that he hoped thereby to be the sooner restored to them (Hebrews 13:19), intimating that he had been formerly among them, - that, now he was absent from them, he had a great desire and real intention to come again to them, - and that the best way to facilitate his return to them, and to make it a mercy to him and them, was to make it a matter of their prayer. When ministers come to a people as a return of prayer, they come with greater satisfaction to themselves and success to the people. We should fetch in all our mercies by prayer."

If you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ and His amazing healing power, pray this from your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ (you speaking directly to Him), Dear Lord Jesus, I confess to You that I am a sinner and I need Your forgiveness. I believe You shed Your Blood and died for my sins. I believe that You rose from the dead proving that You alone are God. I repent of my sins. I want to turn from my sins. I ask You Dear Lord Jesus to come into my heart and take control of my life. I want You to be my Lord, Savior, and my God. Amen...

Letter to the Hebrews Volume 187

Sacrifices Pleasing to God Part 14

Hebrews 13:17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you. KJV

In this very next verse of Scripture, the writer of Hebrews declares that obeying the Pastor or Preacher that our God has placed in position to lead is a sacrifice that is pleasing to our Father in Heaven. The πŸ‘Ά children of God are not to give up their/our own conscience or our judgment, but instead submit to their leadership, so long as their leadership is directed by the truth of the Word of God. We can look sadly back in history and are reminded of good souls who wanted to do the will of God, but they submitted themselves to a πŸ‘¨ man or πŸ‘© woman that led them into paths of destruction instead of the truth. The type of leader that is pleasing to God the Father is one who labors in the Word of God as the Apostle Paul reminded Brother Timothy with these words, "Let the Elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the Word and Doctrine. For the Scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward." (1 Timothy 5:17-18) (KJV). So then, the Elder or Pastor or Teacher or Bishop or Reverend are those who must desire to lead the children of God into the Truth of God's Word. Yet, we know that neither of these 🚹 men or 🚺 women are without sin, but it is their sincerity to our Lord Jesus Christ and His Truth that is of utmost importance and their desire to please Him. Therefore, the πŸ“ writer of Hebrews declares these words to the Hebrew converts to Christ back then as well as all of us who belong to Him today and from every era and generation, "Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you." (Hebrews 13:17) (KJV). Those who are appointed by Christ to lead should be our guides just as the Apostle Paul declared to the Corinthian believers with these words, "Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ." (1 Corithians 11:1) (KJV).

The leader appointed by God should be a πŸ‘¨ man or πŸ‘© woman who is following our Lord Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Scripture and not bringing in heretical doctrines that are not supported by the Word of God, for this is why the children of God must read, study, and pray over the Word of God individually so that we may be able to discern these false teachers from the true teachers of Christ. The Apostle Peter gave us a glimpse into what the real motivation of the false teachers would be with tbese words, "But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not." (2 Peter 2:1-3) (KJV). Notice that the false teachers use subtleness to spread their πŸ€₯ lies to gain the favor of people (even some of the true people of God) and take from them to enrich themselves, that is, to make merchindise of people. The television airwaves today are full of these people. Let us be prudent, patient, and purposefully studying and praying that we might not fall into any of these subtle web of πŸ€₯ lies that will throw us 🚡 off course. It is the desire of the true leader of God (who leads and governs as Christ does) to watch for our souls as one would be taking first watch in a camp in the woods or wilderness to ward off or scare off predators that would come into the camp to hurt and kill all there. This is the hearts desire of the leader of God that has been truly appointed by Christ Himself, for they don't see their brothers and sisters in Christ as those in whom they can take from, but to give to and mainly their understanding of the Word of God as the Lord Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit imparts, imbues, and illuminates His Word to them, for this is profitable to them and to us.

Here is what Albert Barnes had to say of Hebrews 13:17, "The reference here is to their religious teachers, and not to civil rulers. They were to show them proper respect, and to submit to their authority in the Church, so far as it was administered in accordance with the precepts of the Saviour. The obligation to obedience does not, of course, extend to anything which is wrong in itself, or which would be a violation of conscience. The doctrine is, that subordination is necessary to the welfare of the Church, and that there ought to be a disposition to yield all proper obedience to those who are set over us in the Lord. That is, to all which they enjoin that is lawful and right. There are in relation to a society: (1) Those things which God has positively commanded - which are always to be obeyed. (2) Many things which have been agreed on by the society as needful for its welfare - and these are to be submitted to unless they violate the rights of conscience; and (3) Many things which are in themselves a matter of no express divine command, and of no formal enactment by the community. They are matters of convenience; things that tend to the order and harmony of the community, and of the propriety of these, 'rulers' in the Church and elsewhere should be allowed to judge, and we should submit to them patiently. Hence, in the Church we are to submit to all the proper regulations for conducting public worship; for the promotion of religion; and for the administration of discipline. They have no selfish aim in this. They do not seek 'to lord it over God’s heritage.' It is for your own good that they do this, and you should therefore submit to these arrangements. And this shows also the true principle on which authority should be exercised in a church. It should be in such a way as to promote the salvation of the people; and all the arrangements should be with that end. The measures adopted, therefore, and the obedience enjoined, should not be arbitrary, oppressive, or severe, but should be such as will really promote salvation. The Ministers of religion must give account to God for their fidelity. For all that they teach, and for every measure which they adopt, they must soon be called into judgment. There is, therefore, the best security that under the influence of this solemn truth they will pursue only that course which will be for your good. That they may do it with joy, and not with grief - Greek ΞΌΞ·̀ στΡνά΢οντΡς mē stenazontes - not sighing, or groaning; as they would who had been unsuccessful. The meaning is, that they should so obey, that when their teachers came to give up their account they need not do it with sorrow over their perverseness and disobedience. That is, their giving up their account in that manner - as unsuccessful in their efforts to save you - would not be of advantage to you, but would be highly injurious. This is a strong mode of expressing the idea that it must be attended with eminent peril to their souls to have their religious teachers go and give an account against them. As they would wish, therefore, to avoid that, they should render to them all proper honor and obedience."

Amen...

Letter to the Hebrews Volume 186

Sacrifices Pleasing to God Part 13

Hebrews 13:16 But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. KJV

Doing good in this world is not something that is foreign to human beings. Many people in the past and now in the present find it satisfying to themselves internally to do something to help out another human being, however, the motivation for doing good is not always so easily seen on the exterior. For example, many politicians throughout our country and the rest of the πŸ—Ί world make a show of doing good deeds in the πŸ”° beginning in order to get into the place of power and then to enrich themselves at the very expense of those same people that they did some token good deeds for to win them over. In our very next verse of this ✉ letter to the Hebrew converts to Christ back then and to each and everyone of us converted to Christ today and of every era and generation. The author of this ✉ letter does not want any of us to be confused as to our motivation for doing good and that is to please the One (Jesus Christ our Lord) who is satisfied with us when we do so to glorify Him and not to bring attention to ourselves or to get something for ourselves. Many people in the earth do good things, but their motivation comes not from God, but in most cases comes from the guilty conscience that lives within them that they are trying to silence by out numbering their bad deeds with good ones. We who now know our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ know and understand that this attempt to keep a counting system of good deeds versus bad deeds can never be done accurately by any individual human being, however, God has the complete and accurate tally, but He does not use this to save people.

When the books are πŸ”“ opened by Him every man and woman (without Christ) is judged by what He has compiled, as it is written, "And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works." (Revelation 20:12) (KJV). Therfore, when we hear these words from the πŸ“ writer of Hebrews, "But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased." (Hebrews 13:16) (KJV) we know that our desire is to please God with how we treat every human soul we encounter, even the two-legged 😈 devils being used by our enemy to hurt and harm us. This is exactly why men and women establish Youtube channels and write blogs and books πŸ“š as we pray and rely on God the Holy Spirit to teach and communicate to us the truth of His Word, so that we can communicate this truth of the Gospel of Christ out into the entire world because we know that all the πŸ—Ί world needs Jesus Christ and that without Him they will suffer forever in hell/lake of πŸ”₯fire, therefore, we do this good as the Apostle Paul wrote to the Galatian belivers, "Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things. Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith." (Galatians 6:6-10) (KJV).

Here is what Matthew Henry had to say of Hebrews 13:16, "We must, according to our power, communicate to the necessities of the souls and bodies of men; not contenting ourselves to offer the sacrifice of our lips, mere words, but the sacrifice of good deeds; and these we must lay down upon this altar, not depending upon the merit of our good deeds, but of our Great High Priest; and with such sacrifices as these, adoration and alms thus offered up, God is well pleased; He will accept the offering with pleasure, and will accept and bless the offers through Christ." Here also is what Albert Barnes had to say of Hebrews 13:16, "To communicate or impart to others; that is, to share with them what we have. The Greek word means having in common with others. The meaning is, that they were to show liberality to those who were in want, and were to take special pains not to forget this duty. We are prone to think constantly of our own interests, and there is great danger of forgetting the duty which we owe to the poor and the needy. He is pleased with the sacrifices of prayer and of praise; with the offerings of a broken and a contrite heart: but He is especially pleased with the religion which leads us to do good to others. This was eminently the religion of His Son, the Lord Jesus; and to this all true religion prompts. The word 'sacrifices' here is not taken in a strict sense, as denoting what is offered as an expiation for sin, or in the sense that we are by doing good to attempt to make atonement for our transgressions, but in the general sense of an offering made to God. God is pleased with this: (1) Because it shows in us a right state of heart; (2) Because it accords with His own nature. He does good continually, and He is pleased with all who evince the same spirit."

Amen...

Letter to the Hebrews Volume 185

Sacrifices Pleasing to God Part 12

Hebrews 13:15 By Him (Jesus) therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His Name. KJV

Jesus Christ and His Sacrficial death upon the Cross of Calvary is the only way God the Father will communicate with sinful human beings. Through Him (Jesus Christ) and by Him is the only way for human sinners to ever be linked up with the One & Only True God. Therefore, as we saw from the previous study/commentary, this only occurs when any sinner hears the Gospel of Grace or Christ and is then awakened from their spiritual 😴 sleep or spiritual stupor into the Truth of God which is the Word of God. This 🀭 realization should also awaken in each one of us the desire to praise God the Father through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, just as the writer of Hebrews declares with these words, "By Him (Jesus) therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His Name." (Hebrews 13:15) (KJV). The English word 'praise' is translated by the Greek word ainesis (used this one time only in the New Testament) which means a praising (the act), that is, (specifically) a thank (offering): - praise. In other words, this is the attitude of gratitude we should live in every single day giving God the Father thanks for sending His Son our Lord Jesus Christ and giving Him thanks for the Gospel of Grace that pricked our sinful inner man and inner woman breaking us, bruising us, and bringing us to the point where God the Holy Spirit could then regenerate us, revive us, and rebirth us into adopted sons and daughters of God, as it is written by the Apostle Paul with these words, "For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together." (Romans 8:15-17) (KJV). Praising God should be more of our daily posture, rather than complaining about our circumstances or trial's because we have been 🚚 delivered from the worst circumstance that any human soul could face and that being spending eternity in hell/lake of πŸ”₯ fire (Revelation 20:14-15). Continually thanking Him for His grace and mercy to each one of us who believe on our Lord Jesus Christ ALONE for forgiveness of our sin is indeed our number one priority. Therefore, I shall pray and praise as the great Psalmist King David did with these words, "Save me, O God, by Thy Name, and judge me by Thy strength. Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth. For strangers are risen up against me, and oppressors seek after my soul: they have not set God before them. Selah. Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul. He shall reward evil unto mine enemies: cut them off in Thy truth. I will freely sacrifice unto thee: I will praise Thy name, O LORD; for it is good. For He hath delivered me out of all trouble: and mine eye hath seen His desire upon mine enemies." (Psalms 54:1-7) (KJV).

Here is what Alexander MacLaren had to say of Hebrews 13:15, "‘By Him, therefore, let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually.’ What are these offerings? Christ’s death stands alone, incapable of repetition, meeting no repetition, the eternal, sole, ‘sufficient obligation and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world.’ But there be other kinds of sacrifice. There are sacrifices of thanksgiving as well as for propitiation. And we, on the footing of that great sacrifice to which we can add nothing, and on which alone we must rest, may bring the offerings of our thankful hearts. These offerings are of a two-fold sort, says the writer. There are words of praise. There are works of beneficence. The service of man is sacrifice to God. That is a deep saying and reaches far. Such praise and such beneficence are only possible on the footing of Christ’s sacrifice, for only on that footing is our praise acceptable; and only when moved by that infinite mercy and love shall we yield ourselves, thank offerings to God. And thus, brethren, the whole extent of the Christian life, in its inmost springs, and in its outward manifestations, is covered by these two thoughts - the ‘feast on the sacrifice once offered, and the sacrifices which we in our turn offer on the altar. If we thus, moved by the mercy of God, ‘yield ourselves as living sacrifices, which is our reasonable service,’ then not only will life be one long thank-offering, but as the Apostle puts it in another place, death itself may become, too, a thankful surrender to Him. For He says, ‘I am ready to be offered.’ And so the thankful heart, resting on the sacrificial life and death of Jesus Christ, makes all life a thanksgiving, ‘death God’s endless mercy seals, and makes the sacrifice complete.’ There is one Christ that can thus hallow and make acceptable our living and our dying, and that is the Christ that has died for us, and lives that in Him we may be priests to God. There is only one Christianity that will do for us what we will need, and that is the Christianity whose centre is an altar, on which the Son of God, our Passover, is slain for us." Here also is what Matthew Henry had to say of Hebrews 13:15, "The sacrifice of praise to God, which we should offer up to God continually. In this are included all adoration and prayer, as well as thanksgiving; this is the fruit of our lips; we must speak forth the praises of God from unfeigned lips; and this must be offered only to God, not to angels, nor saints, nor any creature, but to the Name of God Alone; and it must be by Christ, in a dependence upon His meritorious satisfaction and intercession."

Amen...

Letter to the Hebrews Volume 184

Sacrifices Pleasing to God Part 11

Hebrews 13:13-14 Let us go forth therefore unto Him without the camp, bearing His reproach. For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. KJV

The most important thing that we as followers of our Lord Jesus Christ can do is to declare the truth to the rest of humanity and the most important truth that they need to here from us is that Jesus Christ and His shed Blood on Calvary is the ONLY acceptable sacrifice for their sins to God the Father (John 14:6). This is what will take us outside of the πŸ• camp of the old Jewish system, but we will be outside of the πŸ• camp of all the other ways people believe will get them to heaven or the more common phrase repeated by billions of human beings over many centuries and millenniums is 'they are in a better place', for how they got there is never articulated, yet they are magically there when they die. We who know our Lord Jesus Christ, know that this is fallacy, fantasy, and foolishness. So, when we declare the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ and proclaim that He ALONE is the only Atonement for their sins before a Pure, Perfect, and Powerful God, then we will feel the sting of being outside of the camp bearing His reproach, just as the writer of Hebrews declares to us with these words, "Let us go forth therefore unto Him without the camp, bearing His reproach. For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come." (Hebrews 13:13-14) (KJV). The little English phrase 'let us go forth' is translated by the Greek word exerchomai which means to depart (out of), escape, get out, go forth, proceed forth, spread abroad. The English word 'camp' is translated by the Greek word parembolē meaning a throwing in beside (juxtaposition), that is, (specifically) battle array, encampment or barracks. The English word 'bearing' is translated by the Greek word pherō̄  is a primary verb (for which other and apparently not cognate ones are used in certain tenses only, meaning to bear, carry, endure, or uphold. The English word 'reproach' is translated by the Greek word oneidismos meaning contumely, that is, abuse, insult, revilement: - reproach. In other words, when we are awakened from our spiritual stupor by the Grace of God, we see the world that we continue to live in (as the remaining time is all according to the will of God) through an entirely different set of eyes.

No longer are we concerned by, carried away with, or consumed by the shiny trinkets of this πŸ—Ί world, but we see the things of this world πŸ—Ί in their true light of soon destruction and we see all other human beings as we once were, asleep spiritually and it is our only responsibility to use the things of this world πŸ—Ί to spread the Gospel of Grace as far as we can do so, praying that God the Holy Spirit brings many souls out of their spiritual stupor's  just as He has done with each and everyone of us who believe in our Lord Jesus Christ, for we remember the words of our Brother in Christ the Apostle Peter when he wrote, "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." (2 Peter 3:9) (KJV). God became a Man in the Person of Jesus Christ and willingly allowed Himself to be physically brutalized in His human flesh, so that He would be the Perfect sacrifice for the sins of any human sinner that would come to Him ALONE for the forgiveness of their sins. So, how much more shall we bear the reviling, rebuke, and reproach of all who resist, refuse, and reject Him as their ONLY sacrifice for sin and wallow in the πŸ‘Ώ devil's lies that all roads lead to God and that the good πŸ•‰️ Hindu, the good Muslim, the good Buddhist, and the good Spiritualist or any of the other numerous religious and spiritual beliefs that are all πŸ€₯ lies propagated, proclaimed, and promoted by the 😈 devil to lead the souls of men and women down a dark path of eternal destruction without or Lord Jesus Christ as their mediator between them and God, just as the Apostle Paul πŸ›‘ stopped to say these words to Brother Timothy, "I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus; Who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time." (1 Timothy 2:1-6) (KJV).

Here is what Albert Barnes had to say of Hebrews 13:13-14, "As if we were going forth with Him when He was led away to be crucified. He was put to death as a malefactor. He was the object of contempt and scorn. He was held up to derision, and was taunted and reviled on His way to the place of death, and even on the Cross. To be identified with Him there; to follow Him; to sympathize with Him; to be regarded as His friend, would have subjected one to similar shame and reproach. The meaning here is, that we should be willing to regard ourselves as identified with the Lord Jesus, and to bear the same shame and reproaches which He did. When He was led away amidst scoffing and reviling to be put to death, would we, if we had been there, been willing to be regarded as His followers, and to have gone out with Him as His avowed disciples and friends? Alas, how many are there who profess to love Him when religion subjects them to no reproach, who would have shrunk from following Him to Calvary! We do not regard this as our final home, or our fixed abode, and we should be willing to bear reproaches during the little time that we are to remain here. If, therefore, in consequence of our professed attachment to the Saviour, we should be driven away from our habitations, and compelled to wander, we should be willing to submit to it, for our permanent home is not here, but in heaven. The object of the writer seems to be to comfort the Hebrew Christians on the supposition that they would be driven by persecution from the city of Jerusalem, and doomed to wander as exiles. He tells them that their Lord was led from that city to be put to death, and they should be willing to go forth also; that their permanent home was not Jerusalem, but heaven, and they should be willing in view of that blessed abode to be exiled from the city where they dwelt, and made wanderers in the earth."

Amen...

Sincerely in Christ,
