Jesus is Compassion

Luke 7:11-15 Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother. NKJV

The very loud cry from many people today around the world is where is God? It seems as if we are now beginning to anticipate that the next day will reveal some act of terrorism and violence that will make the previous one seem mild. The human heart appears to have no limit or boundary as to what low level of depravity it will stoop to. People ask constantly what kind of God would sit back and watch young children being massacred and not intervene and stop such acts? The answer to these questions are easy for those of us who know the love, mercy, and compassion of our God Jesus Christ, but to the still unbelieving masses it remains a mystery. Simply said Jesus Christ is God and He is infinite compassion.

I just this morning listened to the first part of the testimony of Pablo Montez on the radio broadcast entitled “Unshackled” (it can be found @ Oneplace.com) and he spoke about at least 3 different times where his life should have been lost but instead he survived those times and it was due solely to the compassion, love, and mercy from Jesus Christ who he had yet to surrender his life to. Our Lord Jesus Christ demonstrated His great love to us human beings that while we were still sinners He died for us to remove our sin, free us from sin, and reconcile us to our Heavenly Father. It was our Lord’s compassion that preserved the life of Pablo Montez and gave him time to come to Him in repentance and faith. The Lord Jesus does not show partiality or favoritism to any human being over another. We all are alike each one born in sin and choose to go in our sinful rebellion against the One True God Jesus Christ. It is by His mercies that any of us are not consumed. It is mercy and compassion that wakes us each morning giving us breath in our lungs and causing our physical hearts to keep beating.

Psalms 86:5 For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You. NKJV

It is only by our inherited sin nature from our first parents Adam and Eve that we witness the world of woe, hate, violence, and destruction. Our Lord Jesus has accomplished through His sinless life, His death on the cross, His burial, and His resurrection from the dead victory over that inherited sin nature for everyone that comes to Him broken, contrite, and turning away from their own sin to trust Him only and completely. This is the greatest act of compassion the world has ever known. He is now through those that He has redeemed (the born again ones, His ambassadors) going through the world even as the world remains in hate, violence, and destruction plucking individual souls from the fire through His gospel.

Psalms 86:15 But You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, Longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth. NKJV

In this 7th Chapter of Luke’s gospel we see a picture of our Lord plucking an individual soul from the fire of sin, death, and destruction. First, as our Lord came into a city called Nain (this is a city in Palestine) He saw a young man who was dead being carried out of the city to be buried and He looked at the boy’s Mother weeping for her son and our Lord’s very inner man yearned and ached for this Mother. And the Scripture said, “When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, ‘Do not weep.’” This is the same inner yearning that compels redeemed men and women today to give out gospel tracts, give personal testimonies as did Pablo Montez, pray for people in their family and outside of their family for years if need be, and to bear up against mockery, ridicule, and even physical violence as we stand in spiritual warfare daily against satan and his wicked demons in high places contending and doing battle for the souls of lost people. We pray without ceasing longing to see our Lord work His grace out in their hearts and transfer them from spiritual death into spiritual life in Him.

2 Corinthians 5:11 Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are well known to God, and I also trust are well known in your consciences. NKJV

When our Lord said to the Mother, “Do not weep” it was because He alone is the resurrection and the life and He knew He was going to raise this young man from the dead. Our Lord is still the resurrection and the life as He sits at the right hand of the Father in Heaven on His Throne of grace with His gospel that is like fire and like a hammer breaking the hardest rock of human hearts into pieces and bringing in His resurrection life that makes a new creation where old things pass away and He makes all things brand new. Our Lord saw this Mother’s grief and despair and looked on her with compassion and so does our Lord still today hear the prayers of His sons and daughters as we cry out for those we love in prayer desiring to see their hearts regenerated by His grace through faith. For there can be no greater sense of grief, loss, and despair of soul than that of a Mother who loses a child, but just as agonizing as the grief of this Mother and any Mother has over the loss of a child our Lord is troubled in seeing lost humanity continue to reject and resist His offer of grace and it moves Him with compassion to continue to offer His grace of freedom and deliverance.

Psalms 145:8 The LORD is gracious and full of compassion, Slow to anger and great in mercy. NKJV

He expresses His heart through the heart of the Apostle Paul when he wrote, “I tell the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit, that I have great sorrow and continual grief in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my countrymen according to the flesh, who are Israelites” and so is the heart of all of Christ’s slaves who love Him and desire to see others saved from their sins. He spoke words of resurrection life to this young man as His gospel does today makes alive those who were dead in their trespasses and sins, for this is the compassion of our Lord Jesus Christ. And so will our Lord present every resurrected soul to His Father and our Father blameless without spot or wrinkle in that Last Day. As the apostle Paul again wrote, “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Isaiah 63:7-9 I will mention the loving-kindnesses of the LORD And the praises of the LORD, According to all that the LORD has bestowed on us, And the great goodness toward the house of Israel, Which He has bestowed on them according to His mercies, According to the multitude of His loving-kindnesses. For He said, “Surely they are My people, Children who will not lie.” So He became their Savior. In all their affliction He was afflicted, And the Angel of His Presence saved them; In His love and in His pity He redeemed them; And He bore them and carried them All the days of old. NKJV

“His (Jesus) is a loving, tender hand, full of sympathy and compassion.” D. L. Moody 1837-1899

“Christians, you who are vessels of election - were by nature as wicked as others - but God had compassion on you and plucked you as brands out of the fire! He stopped you in your course of sinning - when you were marching to hell! He turned you back to Him by sincere repentance. Oh, here is the banner of love displayed over you!” Thomas Watson 1620-1686

If you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ and His amazing healing power, pray this from your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ (you speaking directly to Him), Dear Lord Jesus, I confess to You that I am a sinner and I need Your forgiveness. I believe You shed Your Blood and died for my sins. I believe that You rose from the dead proving that You alone are God. I repent of my sins. I want to turn from my sins. I ask You Dear Lord Jesus to come into my heart and take control of my life. I want You to be my Lord, Savior, and my God. Amen...

Sincerely in Christ,
