Journey through the Book of Romans

Paul knows Israel must Believe the Gospel Part 4

Romans 10:11-13 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.” NKJV

Paul has been up to this point in his letter going back to the Old Testament several times and referencing words from the Prophet Isaiah and even Moses to drive home the point to the Jews about the absolute Supremacy of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. This is why Paul uses the Greek word kurios or kuros which means exactly that Supremacy. Paul has poured out all of his very own heart and soul in prayer and teaching of God’s Holy Word of Truth to awaken the Jewish leaders out of their spiritual slumber or stupor, Paul was once a victim of this deadness so this was why he so agonized over them. Paul knew that zeal for God absent the life of God in them was as worthless as a $250,000 car with no engine in it. Paul has explained in detail what believing on the Lord Jesus Christ consist of and what this faith or trust in the Lord Jesus Christ looks like. Now Paul speaks of the immediate reward or benefit from putting ones whole weight (as sitting down in a chair) on the Lord Jesus Christ alone for justification with God the Father. Although Paul is still speaking about what those born in the flesh as Jews must do, this word is for every sinful soul of man or woman, Jew or Gentile. Paul says that every sinful soul that turns to our Lord Jesus Christ will never ever be ashamed. This English word ashamed is translated as such from the Greek word kataischuno which means to dishonor, disgrace, to put to shame, make ashamed, to be ashamed, blush with shame one is said to be put to shame who suffers a repulse, or whom some hope has deceived. Paul used this word here as he is speaking of the Jews and to the Jews because Paul knew the bitter hatred, jealousy, envy, and repulse the Jews had toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

Listen to these words spoken by some of the Jews about and to our Lord Jesus Christ and His response to them, John 8:48-59 The Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?” Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. “But I do not seek My glory; there is One who seeks and judges. “Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he will never see death.” The Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets also; and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word, he will never taste of death.’ “Surely You are not greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died too; whom do You make Yourself out to be?” Jesus answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’; and you have not come to know Him, but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I will be a liar like you, but I do know Him and keep His word. “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I Am.” Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple. NKJV

Paul was once one of the staunches and most fierce weapons the Jewish High Priest sent out to destroy the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ and this surely is the same sort of discourse he would have with the disciples of our Lord before he would bind them and carry them off to prison and to their deaths by the mouths of lions and many other gruesome and evil manners of torture. Paul knew he was not dealing with people who were not humanly intelligent or barbarians, but these men were ignorant and barbaric spiritually and blinded with bitter hatred for our Lord Jesus Christ as their hearts were cold, callous, and contentious at every mention of the Name of Jesus Christ. Remember what Dr. Luke recorded for us here in the Book of Acts, Acts 5:40-42 They took his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them. So they went on their way from the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name. And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ. NKJV Paul being before his conversion the perpetrator of these beatings to Christ disciples and now after his conversion Paul has been the recipient of the same beatings he use to administer (2 Corinthians 11:23-25). Paul speaks now as a man in love with the Lord of Glory and declares to the Jews and to all who would listen to these words from his pen that no one receiving forgiveness of sins from Jesus Christ will ever be ashamed or disappointed in their salvation no matter what happens in this temporary sojourn and pilgrimage down here on the earth away from the physical presence of our Precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Paul knows personally that despite our disregard, disdain, or disapproval of the Lord Jesus Christ, that He has an infinite treasure chest of grace (Ephesians 3:8) to furnish to every person (Rejecting Jew or Pagan Gentile) that call or the Greek word epikaleomai which means to invoke for aid or worship; request earnestly the Lord Jesus Christ and ask for aid or protection. These words from Paul here in no way contradict his teaching of God’s Sovereign Election of His Eternal sons and daughters because all whom God the Father has Elected for salvation before the foundation of the world will call out to Him from the depths of our sinful souls seeking or requesting in a very serious manner help from the Lord Jesus Christ that only He can supply to save us from danger and our sin, like Peter said, Matthew 14:28-31 Peter said to Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” NKJV This is the same since that Paul is conveying to us here that our Lord Jesus knows all who belong to Him, but all who belong to Him will cry out from the very depths of their souls for Him to rescue them from their frightening and horrifying sinful, rebellious, and wicked hearts and He will stretch forth His Hand overflowing with grace to lift them out of the pit of sin and depravity every time. This is perhaps the deepest truth Paul has written thus far and that is the word “whosoever” and in the Greek it has a great and deep meaning of “whosoever” or “whoever” or “whatever person”. Therefore, if anyone wants a definition of the Elect of God here it is in this verse written here by the Apostle Paul, Romans 10:13 “For ‘Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.’” NKJV The point Paul is making here is if anyone wants to be saved or sozo which means delivered, rescued, made safe, and healed from sin immediately they only need to call on the Lord Jesus Christ (for He alone and only can save) and they will be saved forever, no if ands buts or maybes, Hallelujah!

Proverbs 18:10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous runs into it and is safe. NKJV

Joel 2:32 “And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the LORD Will be delivered; For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem There will be those who escape, As the LORD has said, Even among the survivors whom the LORD calls.” NKJV

“Calling upon the name of the Lord is here put for all practical religion. What is the life of a Christian but a life of prayer? It implies a sense of our dependence on Him, an entire dedication of ourselves to Him, and a believing expectation of our all from Him. He that thus calls upon Him shall be saved. It is but ask and have; what would we have more?” Matthew Henry

“The elect are whosoever will, and the non-elect, whosoever won’t.” Henry Ward Beecher

“If God would have painted a yellow stripe on the backs of the elect I would go around lifting shirts. But since He didn’t I must preach ‘whosoever will’ and when ‘whatsoever’ believes I know that he is one of the elect.” Charles Spurgeon

“The futile disputes and dissensions that have occurred over the centuries about this matter of election vs. human will is just that futile and can clearly be squashed by Paul’s words here in Romans 10:13, because God’s Elect are only those souls who cry out to Him poor in spirit, mourning over their sinful hearts, and seeking the only remedy that can cure and heal, the Blood of the Lamb (Revelation 12:11) poured in to wash them and make them clean (Revelation 1:5).” Clifford D. If you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ and His amazing healing power, pray this from your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ (you speaking directly to Him), Dear Lord Jesus, I confess to You that I am a sinner and I need Your forgiveness. I believe You shed Your Blood and died for my sins. I believe that You rose from the dead proving that You alone are God. I repent of my sins. I want to turn from my sins. I ask You Dear Lord Jesus to come into my heart and take control of my life. I want You to be my Lord, Savior, and my God. Amen...

Sincerely in Christ,
