Journey through the Book of Romans

Paul Exalts the Work of the Helper in us and to us
Romans 8:26-27 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. NKJV

Paul has shown us that our hope in Christ is something blessed and it makes us long for Him to be with Him as Paul himself was in such a strait when speaking to the Philippians by saying, Philippians 1:19-23 For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, according to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. NKJV Paul used the same words “earnest expectation” here to the Philippians that he used in Romans 8:19 when describing how the whole earth and creation waits for the true sons and daughters of God to be made visible as right now they are not all known or are they all together in the same physical location. Paul also uses the same word “hope” hear as he used in Romans 8:24-25 when describing the purpose of our salvation in Christ. Paul spoke these words to the Philippians with great anticipation and the confident expectation that God the Holy Spirit would make him bold and would magnify or make clearly visible Christ in him the hope or confident expectation of glory whether he was killed in prison or whether he lived on longer.
Likewise Paul now comes to exalt even more the work of God the Holy Spirit in us when we are engaged in the privilege of talking with our Heavenly Father, as this is also a time of intense spiritual warfare. Literally the Holy Spirit takes hold of the weakness in our prayers and forms them in accordance to God’s will or desires. Often we all can testify that when we began to speak to our Heavenly Father we find ourselves praying for someone we had no intention or thought to even mention at the beginning. Contrary to the popular message we hear often today of health, wealth, and prosperity, God the Father is not interested in those things being manifested in our lives apart from holiness of life. A healthy, wealthy, and materially prosperous person that names the Name of Jesus Christ and lives an ungodly and unholy life is an abomination to God the Father and He does not have fellowship or communion with such a person (2 Timothy 2:19). It is the Holy Spirit who places the desire in our hearts to pray to the Father about a particular issue or person or persons. Although we have been reborn, regenerated, and redeemed we still find it hard to know what or who we should pray for as it would agree with the Father’s will, therefore, God the Holy Spirit places a desire or burden in and upon our hearts that won’t go away until we bring it before the Throne of our Father and seek His Wisdom about the person, place, or thing. Even though the Scripture is clear that we have been given the mind of Christ, it is still influenced by the assaults from the world, our flesh, and the devil and so it is still feeble and needs to be energized by the Spirit as He conforms us into the image of our Lord, Master, and Savior Jesus Christ.

Sometimes when we are on our knees or on our faces before our Heavenly Father and a half hour has passed and we have yet to verbally utter one word this is the time I feel Paul is referring to here that God the Holy Spirit takes that seemingly emptiness and lifts up to our Father the inner desires of our hearts that we ourselves may not even be aware are there and turns them into praise, worship, and reverence to the Father and also confession of sin, for it is certain that we are not aware of all of our offences each and every day. Often times our prayers can become cold and rigid and formal and rehearsed lacking passion, fear, awe, and reverence. It is the Comforter, the Helper, the Divine Spirit that steps in at these times and at all times teaching us from His Word and empowering our prayers for God the Father’s and our Lord Jesus Christ Glory (John 14:26). The writer of Hebrews spoke of how our Lord Jesus Christ would through the Holy Spirit give or render help and support to His sons and daughters in our times of distress, depression, or discomfort by saying this, Hebrews 2:16-18 For indeed He does not give aid to angels, but He does give aid to the seed of Abraham. Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted. NKJV
Our Lord Jesus sits right now on His Throne of Grace in His Glorified Body bearing still the scars of the pierced side and the holes in His Hands and Feet, but He is also down here right now everywhere upon the earth and elsewhere in His Universe and most importantly he is in you and me by faith in the person of the 3rd member of the trinity God the Holy Spirit giving each one of us the aid and help we need in prayer and in other areas of our sojourn and pilgrimage here on earth. It is God the Holy Spirit who searches our hearts our spirit to know what burdens us and He guides us into prayer to the Father that will render us release from those heavy burdens and emotions that we are able to bear up under the pressure and still rejoice in our Lord Jesus Christ always and walk worthy of the high-calling we have received in Him every day as He helps us. As the Proverb states, Proverbs 20:27 The spirit of a man is the lamp of the LORD, Searching all the inner depths of his heart. NKJV Again the writer of Hebrews makes the point of how our Lord wraps us up so in His Love and Care that not one detail of our daily lives are out of His Sight and He keeps us by His Power and Blood as it is written here in Hebrews 7:25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. NKJV What shall we fear or worry over knowing that our Lord Jesus through the Holy Spirit is constantly, consistently, and continually making intercession for us as He Divinely influences our hearts into the prayers that are God the Father’s Will and For His Glory.

“Real prayer is communion with God, so that there will be common thoughts between His mind and ours. What is needed is for Him to fill our hearts with His thoughts, and then His desires will become our desires flowing back to Him.” A. W. Pink
“Groanings which cannot be uttered are often prayers which cannot be refused.” Charles Spurgeon

“Unless the Spirit of God is with us, we cannot expect that our prayers will be answered.” D. L. Moody
“What is the reason that some believers are so much brighter and holier than others? I believe the difference, in nineteen cases out of twenty, arises from different habits about private prayer. I believe that those who are not eminently holy pray little, and those who are eminently holy pray much.” J. C. Ryle

“Is the Son of God praying in me, or am I dictating to Him?... Prayer is not simply getting things from God,  that is a most initial form of prayer; prayer is getting into perfect communion with God. If the Son of God is formed in us by regeneration, He will press forward in front of our common sense and change our attitude to the things about which we pray. Prayer is not logical, it is a mysterious moral working of the Holy Spirit.” Oswald Chambers
“From the very first moment of my new birth and still to this very moment years later my soul has longed to pray or talk with my Lord Jesus Christ always as much as my lungs long, desire, and need oxygen to breathe in. I cannot image going a whole hour without speaking with my Lord Jesus Christ, let alone a whole day.” Clifford D. Tate, Sr.

If you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ and His amazing healing power, pray this from your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ (you speaking directly to Him), Dear Lord Jesus, I confess to You that I am a sinner and I need Your forgiveness. I believe You shed Your Blood and died for my sins. I believe that You rose from the dead proving that You alone are God. I repent of my sins. I want to turn from my sins. I ask You Dear Lord Jesus to come into my heart and take control of my life. I want You to be my Lord, Savior, and my God. Amen...

Sincerely in Christ,
