John
9:10 Therefore they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?” NKJV
In the last Chapter of John’s gospel we saw an
adulteress woman brought to our Lord Jesus Christ against her will and to her
utter astonishment she received forgiveness of her sins and life she never knew
existed before in Jesus Christ. Here in the 9th Chapter of John’s gospel
our Lord encounters a man born blind begging on the streets for his daily sustenance
as he was accustomed to doing. This blind man was not standing on the street
expecting to have his eyesight healed that he would be able to see for the
first time ever. The man’s day was typical and normal and it pictures every
person born into this world with the disease of sin. This man was born blind so
he had never seen a sunset, a rainbow, a blooming flower, a donkey, a cow, a
sheep, or the face of even his Father and Mother. Like this physically blind man
is every person born to the enslavement of sin and they don’t even know that a
life exist that can bring liberation, freedom, and victory from sins
enslavement.
Isaiah
29:18 In that day the deaf shall hear the words of the book, And the eyes of
the blind shall see out of obscurity and out of darkness. NKJV
I’m certain that this man had tried many things that
were supposed to cure his blindness but they all failed. Now here he is one day
not even desiring to find a cure for his blind eyes when a Man approaches him and
rubs mud on his eyes and tells him, John
9:7 “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” he did
not know who this Man was, but he surely had tried many other methods and it
would do him no harm to be obedient to this Man’s command. Often time
throughout every human generation men and women will try all other avenues of
spirituality seeking truth or the light or enlightenment and be thrust deeper
and deeper into despair, depression, and depravity. The other so called
religions and spiritual paths are all false, fake, and fraudulent and will
never satisfy the longing of the sinner’s soul. When this blind man heeded the
words of our Lord he found the deliverance that he must have prayed for,
dreamed of, and longed for most of his life. The man’s eyes were opened to a
new world for him a world free from the blackness and darkness he was once
bound in, now he can look up and see light as bright as the sun and he can now
put a picture with all the sounds he has heard from his Mother’s womb.
Isaiah
35:5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, And the ears of the deaf shall
be unstopped. NKJV
Likewise the sinner when he encounters the Lord
Jesus Christ his eyes are opened but it is not the blindness of his physical
eyesight but the blindness of his heart that is bound by sins corruption and
captivity. Like the physically blind man the sinner now sees the world around
him through new lenses. No longer is he a captive to his sin but now he has a
power to resist the very things that used to bind him and master him daily. The
sinner becomes a saint by what the Lord Jesus Christ does to him and his world
view changes from that of worldly to a Biblical World View. The man whose
spiritual eyes have been opened filters everything he wants, desires, thinks,
and does through the Bible and his desires have been made new to want to please
the Lord Jesus Christ with everything in his life. The man born physically
blind did not know much about the One who had been so merciful and
compassionate to him to give him his eye sight. So is it with the newly born
again son or daughter of God, they don’t know any theology initially, but they
know that they love Jesus Christ immensely.

3:10 Then they knew that it was he who sat begging alms at the Beautiful Gate
of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had
happened to him. NKJV

Peter 2:9-10 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy
nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who
called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a
people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now
have obtained mercy. NKJV
The blind man was bombarded with questions from the
religious Pharisees about how his eyes were opened that he could now see. The
man previously blind told them over and over what our Lord Jesus did so that he
could now see, but they did not want to believe him to be cured by the Lord
Jesus. No sinner that has been made alive to God by our Lord Jesus Christ can
put into words what has happened in their souls when our Lord open their spiritual
eyes to see the filthiness of our sin, it is a reality so mysterious to us that
our human minds can hardly comprehend the majesty of this glorious
transformation from darkness to light. The blind man did not know exactly who
our Lord Jesus Christ was, but he only knew what he did for him. Likewise the
new creature in our Lord Jesus spends the rest of his earthly pilgrimage growing
in the grace (given to save and given daily to sustain) and knowledge of our
Lord Jesus Christ. Because the Jewish religious rulers did not want to believe
that our Lord Jesus Christ was in fact the Messiah, they questioned the blind
man’s Mother and Father. They wanted to prove that this man’s blindness was not
real and therefore the Lord Jesus did not cure him. So is the devil in every
generation working through his demons and unbelieving people to bring question
to the conversion of those who have been truly born again. This is why the new
creature in Christ Jesus must swim deeply in the Word of God so that we can see
ourselves now as God sees us in Christ.
Our Lord Jesus Christ is the One True God and His
coming to die on the cross for the sins of the world has within His death,
burial, and resurrection from the dead the power to open the eyes of every
spiritually blind sinner in the world. But we see a picture in this account of
John Chapter 9 that some people will not see themselves as spiritually blind. The
blind man healed by our Lord Jesus in this Chapter pictures the souls of men,
women, boys, and girls that recognize their paralysis under sins dominion and
their subsequent desire to have that darkness and dominion taken away from
them. This is the effect of the gospel that it cuts some to the heart at the
same time it further hardens the hearts of the obstinate and thrust them into
deeper spiritual blindness although they don’t see themselves spiritually blind
(John 9:39-41).
Proverbs
26: 12 Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a
fool than for him. NKJV
“God must open the eyes of our understanding before
we can truly know and rightly interpret His truth. His truth is available only
to those with a regenerate spirit and in whom His Spirit dwells, for only the Spirit
can illumine Scripture. Just as the physically blind cannot see the sun, the spiritually blind cannot
see the Son. Both lack proper illumination.” John MacArthur
If
you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ and His amazing healing power, pray this
from your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ (you speaking directly to Him), Dear
Lord Jesus, I confess to You that I am a sinner and I need Your forgiveness. I
believe You shed Your Blood and died for my sins. I believe that You rose from
the dead proving that You alone are God. I repent of my sins. I want to turn
from my sins. I ask You Dear Lord Jesus to come into my heart and take control
of my life. I want You to be my Lord, Savior, and my God. Amen...
