Jesus Warns Against Impenitence

Matthew 11:20-24 Then He began to rebuke the cities in which most of His mighty works had been done, because they did not repent: “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to Heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.” NKJV

The human race has found it very beneficial to give each other warnings in almost every aspect of our lives. When we drive in our automobiles we are often warned by signs telling us to stop or go and signs directing us to alternate driving lanes. Our Pharmacist put warning labels on the medicine we purchase to keep us from eating, drinking, or taking anything that might cause a bad reaction with our medication. To be warned of pending danger of something or someone that could harm is actually not only a decent thing to do, but it is the loving thing to do. Parents warn their children not to go a certain place, do a certain thing, or be with certain people that might negatively impact the child’s life because the Parent loves their child and does not want to see them get hurt or deceived.

Acts 20:31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. KJV

1Corinthians 4:14 I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you. KJV

Our Lord warns against the most hurtful, harmful, horrific, and hellish thing in all of His Universe and that is impenitence. What does impenitence actually mean? Our English dictionary defines it as a refusal to repent; impervious to moral persuasion; stubbornly persistent in wrongdoing. That is strong language because it speaks of a person that willfully continues in the practice of that which is evil. Remember that this is why our Lord said, “Depart from Me”, to some who professed to know Him.

Titus 1:16 They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work. NKJV

The proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ today can be heard on television, radio, in local Churches, on the internet, and even on billboards in some major cities. This leaves all sinners without excuse on that last day. No one (especially in the United States of America) will be able to say that they never heard the gospel of Jesus Christ death, burial, and resurrection from the grave. The person that continues or persist in sin with no desire to turn from his or her sin cannot expect to enter into Heaven after death when they willingly rejected or resisted God the Holy Spirits conviction of sin while they were here on earth.

2 Peter 3:7 But by the same word the present heavens and earth have been stored up (reserved) for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly people. QAB

God the Holy Spirit speaking through the Apostle Peter spoke of our Lord’s great love and patience with impenitent sinners not willing that they perish, but that they would come to repentance. People must first realize their sinful condition and secondly must be willing to turn from their sin to Jesus Christ. There are 3 things that God (the Lord Jesus Christ) cannot do: 1) He cannot lie. 2) He cannot see the sin of His children covered by His Blood. 3) He cannot save any impenitent sinner.

Jeremiah 8:6 I listened and heard, But they do not speak aright. No man repented of his wickedness, Saying, ‘What have I done?’ Everyone turned to his own course, As the horse rushes into the battle. NKJV

Revelation 9:20-21 And the rest of humanity who were not killed by these plagues even then did not repent of [the worship of] the works of their [own] hands, so as to cease paying homage to the demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor move. And they did not repent of their murders or their practice of magic (sorceries) or their sexual vice or their thefts. QAB

“Take heed, therefore, wicked prelates, blind leaders of the blind; indurate and obstinate hypocrites, take heed.” William Tyndale

“Unless you have made a complete surrender and are doing His will it will avail you nothing if you’ve reformed a thousand times and have your name on fifty church records.” Billy Sunday

“If we could be saved from wrath, and yet remain unregenerate, impenitent sinners, we should not be saved as we desire, for we mainly and chiefly pant to be saved from sin and led in the way of holiness.” Charles Spurgeon

“True repentance is no light matter. It is a thorough change of heart about sin, a change showing itself in godly sorrow and humiliation - in heartfelt confession before the throne of grace - in a complete breaking off from sinful habits, and an abiding hatred of all sin. Such repentance is the inseparable companion of saving faith in Christ.” J. C. Ryle

“There was a day when I died; died to self, my opinions, preferences, tastes and will; died to the world, its approval or censure; died to the approval or blame even of my brethren or friends; and since then I have studied only to show myself approved unto God.” George Mueller

If you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ and His amazing healing power, pray this from your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ (you speaking directly to Him), Dear Lord Jesus, I confess to You that I am a sinner and I need Your forgiveness. I believe You shed Your Blood and died for my sins. I believe that You rose from the dead proving that You alone are God. I repent of my sins. I want to turn from my sins. I ask You Dear Lord Jesus to come into my heart and take control of my life. I want You to be my Lord, Savior, and my God. Amen...

Sincerely in Christ,
