Born Blind

John 9:1-5 Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, saying, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him. I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world." NKJV

I would dare say that if we were to ask people what is one of their 5 senses they would most not want to be without, I would expect that the majority would say their sight (healthy eyesight). Our eyes and the ability to see out of those windows are very precious to each one of us and we would be unlikely to part with them for anything. What amount of money would a person be willing to sell one or both of his or her eyes for? Our eyes and the sight that allows us to see the things around us in this world are priceless to us. How much more priceless is the soul?

Our Lord had just passed through a mob of very angry Jews. They heard Him say that He was I AM or God before them in the flesh. They tried to kill Him, but it was not yet His time to die so He just supernaturally removed Himself from their presence and immediately He walked by a man born blind from birth and turned His attention  to him. His disciples felt sorry for this man and wanted to know why he was born blind. What possible wrong could he or his family had done to make him suffer this reality.

The actual reality is that he was born blind physically because sin entered into the world by the first man Adam and now this blind man will be healed by the last Adam (the Lord Jesus Christ) who has entered the world to un-due the damage caused by the first Adam’s sin. This blind man pictures every man and woman born into this world spiritually blind at birth disconnected from God as a plug for an electrical appliance is pulled out of a wall outlet and is rendered unable to operate. So is the heart of every person born into the earth, it is unable to function as God originally designed it to operate. The Lord Jesus Christ is the sin dis-connector and He has come to reconnect spiritually blind man back with the source of all life, love, and liberty by His death, burial, resurrection from the dead.

The manner in which this blind man was healed from his physical infirmity is the like manner in which every sinner will be healed from the spiritual blindness of sin. This blind man was not looking for healing; he was going about his normal routine of begging on the streets for his daily needs. This blind man was not trying to make himself ready or acceptable to God. This blind man was in his blindness and consumed by his blindness but he had an encounter with Jesus Christ and was anointed by the Lord Jesus Christ, washed by Him, and then received his sight. This is salvation God acts and we respond to His action of regeneration. There are no human steps or action items that we can do to be born again.

When this man was asked, “How were your eyes opened?” he did not give them a theological dissertation but he said, “A Man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, 'Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.' So I went and washed, and I received sight.” Simply Jesus gave me my sight, I did not work for Him or do anything He just gave me this gift of sight. Sin can only be removed by the sin-bearer (the Lord Jesus Christ) and all other efforts will end in futility. It is easy for a person born physically blind to see their dark condition, but for some reason (Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? NKJV)  it seems very hard for all of humanity to see the dark condition of their spiritually blind sinful heart.

Isaiah 65:1 I was sought by those who did not ask for Me; I was found by those who did not seek Me. I said, 'Here I am, here I am,' To a nation that was not called by My name. NKJV

“God must open the eyes of our understanding before we can truly know and rightly interpret His truth. His truth is available only to those with a regenerate spirit and in whom His Spirit dwells, for only the Spirit can illumine Scripture. Just as the physically blind cannot see the sun, the spiritually blind cannot see the Son. Both lack proper illumination.” John MacArthur

“One great power of sin is that it blinds men so that they do not recognize its true character.” Andrew Murray

“Our salvation is not in some father or human instruments. It is sad to see people so blinded, worshiping the creature more than the Creator.” William J. Seymour
